Vikings Survive 59-57 In Consolation

Thursday's consolation game of the Plymouth Tournament was library basketball.

Tippecanoe Valley's 59-57 win over John Glenn was played in front of a crowd so hushed at times you could hear the gym's ventilation system running.

Tippecanoe Valley coach Bill Patrick, who won his 497th game, couldn't blame the fans.

"The consolation game," he opined. "The absolute worse basketball game to play. This is the one basketball game they should eliminate. Who wants to play in a losers' game? That's what it is, a losers' game. I have never seen good teams show up and play well in the consolation game.

"We ought to throw out consolation games. I would rather play two scheduled games than a tournament."

The Vikings upped their record to 5-3 with the win, while John Glenn dropped to 5-3. Senior forward Brandon Eaton scored 23 to lead Valley. Senior forward Dax Snyder added 13, and senior guard Noah Silveus scored 11.

Junior Chris Adkins scored 21 to lead John Glenn, albeit on 6-of-23 shooting.

Plymouth (7-2) beat Rochester (4-3) 66-56 in the championship game.

Valley owned a 53-47 lead with 2:29 left when Patrick called a timeout for the specific purpose of setting up a backdoor play. The Vikings returned to the court after the timeout, patiently waited for the opening, and hit it when Snyder, out near the top of the key, whipped the ball inside to Eaton, who made the uncontested layup. Valley led 55-47 with 1:52 left.

"It should have been over after that," Patrick said.

But it wasn't.

The Vikings still led by seven, 59-52, when Eaton fouled out with 47 seconds left. With him gone, the Vikings almost blew their lead. A layup by Matt Alspaugh and a three-pointer by Adkins pulled John Glenn within two at 59-57 with eight seconds left.

Glenn called timeout, and on the in-bounds play, stole the ball away from Valley. The Falcons attempted a shot but missed it as Valley survived a late scare.

Missed free throws in the final 39 seconds gave John Glenn life. Snyder missed the front end of a one-and-one with 39 seconds left, and Andy Martin missed two free throws with 13 seconds left.

"Brandon on the bench makes a big difference," Patrick said. "With him, we would have played totally different. We would have run a 1-2-2 delay with only him touching the ball. We would have wanted teams to foul him."

The game featured the good and bad for Valley. Valley won despite being outrebounded 34-17, and as they did in the 53-51 loss to Plymouth the night before, the Vikings allowed John Glenn to gobble up several offensive rebounds for second-chance shots.

"By the way we blocked out tonight, you would think it was something we never worked on," Patrick said. "We didn't block out on several free throws."

At the same time, Valley committed only 10 turnovers, Eaton was his stellar self, Silveus defended well and got into the passing lanes to disrupt several passes, Justin Ross provided Valley with much-needed rebounding in the second half, and Snyder turned in a solid game.

The win may have come in a consolation game, but Patrick refused to give it back.

"If there is one good thing that comes out of a consolation game, you have a chance to add one more win to your record," he said. "Being 5-3 is a big difference than being 4-4."

Notes: After the game, Patrick said 6-foot-5 senior center Craig Kuhn, who would have been a starter if not for a torn anterior cruciate ligament, will return to play the next game, at Southwood Jan. 7. But Patrick expects Kuhn to play sparingly for at least the first few games...

Another would-be starter, 6-1 junior forward Cody New, will return from his suspension for the Jan. 14 home game against Northfield. ...

Rochester, Tippecanoe Valley and Plymouth play in the Plymouth Sectional. Who was the best team at the Plymouth Tournament? According to Patrick, if you say 7-2 Plymouth, you're wrong. "John Glenn is good," he said after Valley beat Glenn. "They may be the most talented team here, until Rochester gets (injured) Blake Newton back. At the sectional here, Rochester will be the team to beat."
