Vikings Show Improvement Against Plymouth
July 28, 2016 at 4:25 p.m.
AKRON -ÊAfter the first game of the season (an overtime loss to South Bend St. Joseph), Tippecanoe Valley coach Bill Patrick hoped it would be a wake-up call for his team.
It wasn't just a wake up call, it was a bucket-of-cold-water-in-the-face-shocking dose of reality.
"Before the first game, the kids were not listening in practice," said Patrick. "They were not understanding what we wanted them to do."
Tuesday night in Akron, the Vikings hosted Plymouth. But it did not look like the Viking squad that played that overtime game just a few weeks ago.
The Valley squad showed much improvement and defeated the Pilgrims 56-45.
"I went home after the St. Joe game and wondered if we would win a game all season," said Patrick. "I made the guys watch the film of the game - the whole film, not just parts of it - and then I asked them if that's how they planned to play all season. It opened their eyes. I think it was a real wake up call for them.
"Who knows, if we hadn't lost that game, we might be 1-3 right now instead of 3-1."
The Vikings jumped out to an early 11-4 lead in the first quarter, but but the end of the period Plymouth sliced Valley's lead to three, 13-10.
The Pilgrims got as close as two points, 13-11, after Zach Scott picked up a free throw, but Valley recovered quickly.
After Scott's free throw, the Valley squad went on an 11-2 run that put the Vikings a double-figure lead, 24-13.
The teams traded baskets for the rest of the quarter, and the Vikings went into the halftime break with a 29-22 advantage.
In the third quarter, the teams were nearly identical. Both shot 4 of 10 from the field, were 0 of 0 from the free throw line, and scored nine points. The only difference came in rebounding where Valley had 10 and Plymouth pulled down only four.
"We were a bit down offensively in the third quarter," said Patrick, "but we came back in the fourth."
The Vikings pulled away in the fourth quarter as Trey Eaton and Ross Stutzman combined to score the first six points of the quarter.
At the 3:12 mark, Eaton sank two free throws to give Valley its largest lead of the game, 48-34.
Through the remainder of the game, Plymouth got no closer than 11 points, and the Vikings improved to 3-1.
Eaton led all scorers with 27 points. He shot 7 of 10 from the field and was a perfect 13 of 13 from the charity stripe. Eaton also pulled down eight rebounds.
Alex Frantz also scored in double figures for the Vikings with 11 points.
With 15 points, Ben Snyder led the Plymouth squad. His teammate Kyle Davis added 11 points as well.
"Overall, we did a really good job defensively," said Patrick. "Snyder is an aggressive, hard-nosed kid. He's a good player, but we did a good job keeping him under control."
The win moves Valley's record to 3-1 overall. Plymouth falls to 1-1. The Vikings hit the court again Saturday when they host John Glenn.
NOTES: Eaton has not missed a free throw in the last two games. He was 11 of 11 against Fort Wayne Elmhurst and 13 of 13 against Plymouth for 24 straight baskets from the charity stripe ... The Viking defense held one of Plymouth's offensive leaders, Dan Chamberlin, scoreless in the first half. He finished the game with seven points on 3-of-10 shooting ... David Beyers had back-to-back blocks in the game against Plymouth. According to Patrick: "David is making progress. He played football, so he did not start until three weeks before our first game. He is getting better every game, and he did a great job tonight."
