MENTONE - At the end of Tuesday night's Tippecanoe Valley/Wabash girls basketball game, the scoreboard read Valley 75, Wabash 32. The coaches' stat sheets read something like this: Wabash 32, Rhonda Doud 27.
On a night when Valley honored its seniors, playing in their last regular season home game of their careers, at midcourt with their parents, Doud went out in style. With Doud's 27 points, six steals, four rebounds and three assists, the Vikings improved their record to 11-8. Jenny Sanders chipped in with nine points. Wabash was led by Gina Curtis, its only scorer in double figures, with 10 points. Nikki Randas added eight points.
All 12 rostered Vikings broke into the scoring column in the victory.
"The five seniors we have," said Teel, "we started them all. All 12 of our players scored, and some of our younger players got some minutes under varsity conditions. Going into the sectionals, this is what you need, contributions."
The Apaches scored first on a Randas field goal to take an early two-point advantage but only scored one more point the entire opening quarter, a Randas free throw. Wabash shot a dismal 1 of 14 (7.1 percent) from the field and 11 of 51 (21.6 percent) for the game. Comparatively speaking, Valley shot 40 percent from the field in the first quarter and 44.8 percent for the game.
Doud came right back to put the Vikings on the board with a three-point play to take a lead Valley never relinquished. Spanning the opening frame and two minutes of the second stanza, the Vikings went on a 27-3 run that pushed their advantage to a 22-point lead, and by halftime the Apaches were faced with a 32-12 deficit.
The second half was much the same with Valley's defensive pressure coinciding with its offensive firepower.
"We scored 23 points off turnovers," said Teel. "In the second half we scored on 50 percent of our possessions."
Doud opened the third frame with a 4-0 run of her own to push Valley's advantage to 36-12, and with an Erica Pontious field goal at the 2:00 mark, the Vikings were in control 51-19. Valley outscored the Apaches 21-11 in the third frame on eight points from Doud.
"They ran a box and one on her (Doud)," said Teel. "She handled it well and played heady. She bided her time and we got her some open looks. She's raised her level of play and the team looks to her to be the leader. And she gets all those points within a team concept."
Valley kept the offensive fire burning in the fourth quarter with eight points from Doud and a three-pointer from Jenifer Baker to outscore Wabash 22-9 accounting for the 43-point victory.
Valley (11-8) will travel to North Judson for an 11 a.m. contest Saturday.
"We have to look at it as something we can use for the sectional," said Teel. "North Judson is a top notch team and Carroll (Valley's sectional opponent) is a top notch team too. We're going to use that as a building block heading into the sectional."
