MENTONE -ÊFueled by a 23-point third quarter, the Tippecanoe Valley girls basketball team pulled out a 57-42 victory over the Oak Hill Golden Eagles Monday night.
Oak Hill held Valley scoreless for almost three minutes as the Golden Eagles took an early 6-0 lead.
The Golden Eagles were up by as much as 11-3, but by the end of the first quarter, the Vikings had cut Oak Hill's lead to four, 14-10.
Valley kept up with Oak Hill in the second quarter as both teams scored eight points. For Valley, Rhonda Doud scored six of eight Viking points in the second quarter.
At the half, Oak Hill retained its lead 22-18.
Valley came out to play in the third quarter as the Vikings took a 25-22 lead after Brooke Fisher sank a two-point basket and the free throw after she was fouled taking the shot.
After the taking their first lead of the game, the Vikings refused to relinquish it as they outscored Oak Hill 12-2 in the first 3:30 of the third frame.
By the end of the third, Valley had scored 23 points and held a 41-35 lead over Oak Hill.
"In the first half, we were playing not to lose instead of playing to win," said Valley head coach Gary Teel. "We were waiting for something to happen so we could react. When you play not to lose, you sit back on your toes, but when you play to win, you anticipate. We played to win in the second half."
The fourth frame was much like the third as Valley shut down the Oak Hill offense and allowed just seven Oak Hill points in the final quarter.
In the end, Valley defeated Oak Hill 57-42 behind a balanced scoring attack from the Viking squad.
"In the second half, we had some shots go down and made some excellent looks," said Teel. "We got some good passes and were patient with the ball, and that allowed us to get some easy shots."
Doud finished with 17 points and three steals, while Jennifer Studebaker added 15 points, four rebounds, and two steals.
Fisher finished the night with 13 points as she hit 5 of 5 field goals and 3 of 3 from the charity stripe.
"This really was a team effort," said Teel. "Everyone contributed. It truly is a team win because every individual came in and worked for it.
"They don't care who scores, just as long as the job gets done."
Two Golden Eagles scored in double figures as Andrea Monroe scored 20 points, and Stephanie Key pitched in 10.
Monroe also chipped in three rebounds and four steals for Oak Hill.
"These girls have played this way all year," said Teel. "They definitely do not lack hustle and desire. They are winners.
"These girls have the desire and the intensity needed to win."
