Vikings Drop Warriors To 0-5
July 28, 2016 at 4:25 p.m.
MENTONE - Nowadays you have to stand in line to have a chance to speak with Tippecanoe Valley boys basketball coach Bill Patrick after his team plays.
In his first season at the helm of the Vikings, he's become somewhat of a popular man.
After Friday's 58-45 win over Wawasee, a game that improved Valley's record to 4-2 and dropped the Warriors to 0-5, things were no different. There was a long line of congratulations and handshakes for Patrick.
And rightly so. In Patrick's first six games, he's won almost as many as the Vikings won all of last year.
Wawasee got on the board first last night as R.J. Wilson scored two of his seven first- quarter points. Wilson's seven points accounted for all of Wawasee's opening frame offensive output. Eric Prater got the Vikings in the scoring column with his two-point bucket at the 6:40 mark of the first quarter.
Brandon Eaton, the game's leading scorer with 29, put the Vikings on top for the first time, but Wilson came right back with two more of his own. After Jarvis Shepherd tallied Valley's third basket of the night, Eaton connected on one of his six three-pointers to cap off a 5-0 run that pushed the Viking lead to 9-4. Valley led 11-7 after one quarter.
"We came out a little flat," said Patrick. "We played defense well in the first quarter. That's what kept us in the ballgame. We had no movement and nothing was going. Tuesday was our first mid-week game all year, and we weren't ready to play."
Valley's defense held the Warriors to 3-of-8 shooting, while the Vikings shot 5 of 11 from the floor.
In the second stanza, Valley scored first on two Eaton free throws to push its lead to six, 13-7. Wawasee went on a 4-0 run with buckets from Wilson and R.J. Nethaway and drew closer, 13-11. At halftime Wawasee held a slim 19-18 advantage.
"I thought we played hard in the first half," said Wawasee coach Jerry Davis. "We didn't handle the ball well. Defensively they pressured us, but we did a good job on defense and the score indicated that."
Valley made a lineup change at halftime and came out gunning in the third frame and went on to outscore Wawasee 23-11 in the quarter.
"At halftime we went with a more offensive lineup," said Patrick. "We picked up the offense but we had a let down in the fourth quarter. We got a lead but we missed some free throws. Kuhn played better defense all night and Brandon shot tonight like we knew he could all year."
After Nethaway hit two free throws at the 6:46 mark of the third quarter to make the count 23-21, Valley quickly pushed the score to 30-23 in its favor. Going into the final frame the Vikings were in command 41-30.
The Warriors opened up the scoring in the fourth quarter on two Nethaway free throws, a Warner hoop and foul, to go along with a Wilson field goal and the score was quickly 41-37.
"In the fourth quarter we got it down to four after being down 10 but we might have shot too fast," said Davis. "We shot too quickly. That happens with a young team. The bottom line is the ball has to go through the top. In the second half we got the ball inside and not outside."
Valley quickly put a stop to Wawasee's run with another Eaton three-pointer that ran the score to 44-37.
A minute later Zolman brought the Warriors back one more time on a three-pointer of his own, and the score stood 46-43.
Not to be outdone, Eaton nailed yet another long ball and added two free throws to up the score to 51-43. The Vikings outscored the Warriors 7-2 the rest of the way, accounting for the 58-45 final score.
Valley (4-2) will travel to Plymouth to play the Pilgrims Tuesday in the Plymouth Holiday Tournament. Wawasee (0-5) will travel to South Bend Riley tonight.
