AKRON -ÊTippecanoe Valley boys basketball assistant coach Chad Patrick worked all week putting together a special tape of upbeat music to play before the Vikings' game with Whitko Friday night.

However, this was a game that neither team needed extra incentive to get ready for.

It was the first Three Rivers Conference game of the season.

It was a game in front of a packed house.

And it was a game where rivalry was a given.

When all was said and done, Tippecanoe Valley got a 70-60 win, but anyone who was at the game would tell you that it was closer than the score reflected.

Whitko jumped out to an early lead as Adam Wendel hit a three-pointer to open the game, and Alex Frantz hit a jumper from the free throw line to put Whitko up 5-0.

Valley missed five straight shots before Trey Eaton hit the first Viking basket of the night at the 5:45 mark.

Before long, Whitko held a 9-4 advantage, but Valley slowly chipped away at the Wildcat lead until the score was tied at 11 with 2:14 left in the first quarter.

Two free throws by Josh Hoffman put Whitko up 13-11 at the 1:45 mark, but a basket and a free throw by Andy Martin gave Valley a slim 14-13 lead going into the second frame of play.

The Wildcats turned on the jets to start the second quarter. John Woods and Brad Walpole scored the first two baskets of the second stanza to restore Whitko's lead, 18-14.

But again, Valley chipped away at the Wildcat lead. Whitko held the advantage until the 3:03 mark when a basket by Eaton tied the score at 24.

More than a minute later, a trey by Drew Shafer gave Valley its first lead of the second quarter, 27-24.

In the final 1:27 of the first half, Valley outscored Whitko 7-5 to take a 34-29 lead into the locker room.

"In the first half, we were missing a lot of easy shots," said Valley coach Bill Patrick. "In the first quarter, we hurried a bit and took some bad shots."

After Cody New and Martin netted the first baskets of the second half, Valley held a 38-29 lead, but the Wildcats clawed their way back.

A steal and fast-break basket by Hoffman at the 5:30 mark and a basket by Frantz soon after cut Valley's lead to five, 40-35.

Whitko got as close as four points during the third quarter but never took the lead, and Valley entered the final frame of play with a 50-44 advantage.

The game remained close for the first five minutes of the fourth quarter. At the 2:52 point, Whitko trailed by just seven, 60-53.

However, Valley went on a 10-0 run over the next 1:20 to build a 70-53 lead. In the last 55.1 seconds, Whitko scored seven points while holding Valley scoreless, making the final score 70-60.

"We played well in the second half, especially defensively," said Bill Patrick. "Our defense was fairly solid the whole game. We slowed it down in the second half. We told the guys we wanted to see at least four or five passes, and they did well. I thought in the last four or five minutes of the fourth quarter we played very well both offensively and defensively."

New was the man of the hour, or in this case quarter, for Valley in the final eight minutes of play. He hit 5 of 5 field goals and 4 of 4 free throws, while Trey Eaton pitched in a perfect 4-of-4 performance from the free throw line in the final quarter as well. New had 29 points, while Eaton finished the night with 19 points.

Frantz led the Wildcats with 20 points on 9-of-15 shooting from the field and a 2-of-2 performance from the free throw line. Hoffman hit 5 of 10 field goals and 4 of 6 free throws to socre 14 points.

"Frantz, we struggled with him all night, especially in the second half," said Patrick. "We switched around in the second half and put Cody on him, and I think that helped. Hoffman played pretty well, too.

"Whitko has some talent, and they have some good players."

"As a team, we represented ourselves very well," said Whitko coach Steve Pickett. "But you can't be happy when you lose. We lost, and we're not happy. There is no such thing as a moral victory here. It's a conference game. We can't be happy with just being competitive. We want to win."

Valley improves to 4-2 on the season and 1-0 in Three Rivers Conference play, while Whitko, 2-3, is 0-1 in TRC play. The Wildcats host Wabash Friday, and the Vikings are off until they host the Holiday Tournament Dec. 29 and 30.
