PLYMOUTH -ÊGoing into the bye game of the Plymouth Sectional, 19-1 Tippecanoe Valley was favored over 3-17 Kankakee Valley.

On paper.

But veteran coach Bill Patrick knew that the Kougars would not just roll over and let the Vikings stroll into the sectional final.

"The score is not closer that I expected," he said. "I knew they were a lot better team than most people thought. They play a tough schedule, and they are a much better team that their record shows. We were not mentally ready to play, and I think the guys have learned that now it's time to get serious."

While Tippecanoe Valley did advance to the sectional final game against Knox tonight at Plymouth, it was definitely not a leisurely stroll as the Vikings slipped by the Kougars 60-58.

Trey Eaton scored the first basket of the game to give Tippecanoe Valley a 2-0 lead early, but things went south for the Vikings from there.

Kankakee Valley's Justin DeKock answered Eaton's basket with two of his own to put the Kougars up 4-2 with 4:49 left in the first frame.

And for the next three quarters, the Vikings found themselves playing catch-up.

At the end of the first quarter, the Kankakee Valley squad was up 13-10, and it was not about to relinquish that lead without a fight.

Eaton hit two free throws to open the second frame, but DeKock answered with a basket and a free throw for a three-point play.

Then Tippecanoe Valley's Shane Drudge hit a basket, but Kankakee Valley's Jordan Bonesteel ansered with a three-pointer of his own.

Viking Jeff Parker followed with two free throws, but Kougar Calvin Hamstra converted a three-point play to counteract it, and give Kankakee Valley a 22-16 lead with 3:42 left in the second quarter.

Tippecanoe Valley sliced the Kougar lead to two, 24-22, at the 2:27 mark when senior Casey Wise tipped a rebound back into the hoop for a basket.

he teams traded baskets and free throws for the final two minutes of the first half, and Kankakee Valley took a 26-25 advantage into the locker room at the break.

The Kougars did not lose momentum during the 10-minute halftime break. DeKock hit two free throws and Cody Scott hit a basket to increase Kankakee Valley's lead to 32-25 with less than a minute off the third-quarter clock.

Tippecanoe Valley chipped away at that seven-point lead to make the score 39-37 at the end of the third stanza.

Enter Wise.

The 5-foot-11 senior sank the first basket of the fourth frame to tie the score at 39-all, and the race was on.

The teams traded baskets and the lead for the first 3-1/2 minutes of the fourth frame.

Then at the 4:23 mark, Viking sophomore Shane Denny hit a shot to give Tippecanoe Valley its first lead since the opening basket of the first quarter, 45-43.

From that point, the Vikings allowed the Kougars to tie the score several times. However, Tippecanoe Valley never allowed the Kankakee Valley squad to regain the lead.

In the final 4:06 of the game, the Vikings and Kougars played to a 15-all tie, leaving the final score at 60-58 in Tippecanoe Valley's favor.

Even with an off performance, Eaton led all scorers with 24 points. Wise added 10 points, while Drudge netted nine and Denny had seven.

"Shane Denny played well, and Shane Drudge did a nice job. He got in a bit of foul trouble, but he played well," said Patrick. "Trey struggle a bit tonight. I think he was trying too hard. He'll come back and play better in the sectional final."

DeKock led the Kougars with 22 points, while Scott added 16.

The win moves the Viking record to 20-1 overall, while the Kougars finish the season 3-18.
