BOURBON - The Tippecanoe Valley track teams flexed some muscle Tuesday as the girls team outdistanced Triton and Rochester, and the boys team finished second, edging Triton and just narrowly losing to Rochester.

The girls racked up 59-2/3 points despite placing first in just four events. It was the Vikings' depth that carried them to the win. Rochester placed second with 50 and Triton finished third at 46-1/3.

On the boys side, Rochester won a tight meet with 60 points, while Valley scored 54 and Triton 53. Although the Vikings placed second, they still ended first in nine out of 16 events.

In girls action, only Beth Rose and Dana McFarren won individual events for the Valley girls. The Vikings also won the 400 relay and the 1600 relay, but really mopped up in the second through fourth place results. The Vikings ended second in seven events, third in seven events and fourth in five events.

The Triton girls put together five first-place finishes, just one less than Rochester, but were too shorthanded with only 11 athletes on the team. Jenna Weissert was the big winner for the Trojans, with first place results in the long jump, the 100 and the 200. Sisteen Christian won the shot put and Shelly Miller won the 3200. But the Trojans were hurt by some distance runners that were not at full strength.

"Reghan Kreft was kind of hurting," Triton head coach Jason Hunter said. "She couldn't run in the 3200. And Shelly Miller didn't run in the 800."

Those two often finish first and second in the distance events, but Rochester had a strong runner in the distance events too, Jaime Hartzler. She won both the 800 and the 1600 with relative ease.

"Hartzler's tough," Hunter said. "She's a cross country runner too, and Kreft and Miller and her battled back and forth throughout that season."

In boys action, Valley's Joey Manns won the long jump and the 300 hurdles, while Mike McNeal won the 100 and the 200 and anchored the winning 400 relay team. Adam Smith, Eric Prater and Kevin Hileman all won individual events. The Vikings also took first in the 1600 relay.

McNeal was particularly impressive as he passed two different Rochester runners in the final 50 meters to win the 200.

Triton was a battered team as Josh Heck was just returning to action after missing the mat while pole-vaulting a few weeks ago and hurting his tailbone. Just before the meet, four-event star Jack Hackworth twisted his ankle and couldn't run.

Heck, however, rose to the occasion, winning the high jump and the pole vault. Mason McIntyre won, as usual, the 1600 and 3200 for the Trojans, and the 3200 relay team set a school record with a time of 8:46 to run away with the win.

Both the Valley boys and girls will compete in the Oak Hill Relays Saturday at 5 p.m., while Triton will be at LaVille Thursday at 4:30 p.m.
