ViewPoint Motel To Be Torn Down
July 28, 2016 at 4:25 p.m.
The former ViewPoint Motel, 935 N. Detroit St., will be demolished in May because the cost of bringing it up to habitable standards is too high.
The owner of the property, Michael Conley, committed to having the structure torn down by May 17 to Code Enforcement Hearing Officer Larry Clifford during Tuesday's hearings. The building will be vacated by April 1.
"I've determined that the cost of repairing the 17 units to bring them up to standard would not be cost-effective," Conley said.
Clifford imposed a $1,000 civil fine on Conley, whose son lives in one of the units and serves as property manager, but suspended the collection of it pending the demolition. If the building is demolished by the May 17 hearing date, the fine would be waived.
Conley, who is also a local dentist, said his current plans are to build a new dental office at the location, with an expected completion date of late spring 2000.
"While my plan is to build a new office for myself at that location, obviously, if someone comes along and makes me a good offer for the land, I'd have to consider it," he said.
James Claussen, owner of a five-unit apartment building at 111 S. Wood St., was given 45 days to complete repairs to the building, or face a $1,000 fine. One unit in the building has already been condemned as unsafe for occupancy and contains structural deficiencies that could put the entire building in danger, according to Warsaw building inspector Pam Kennedy.
"I've found that being an absentee landlord makes it too difficult to maintain the property," Claussen said.
He said he is in the process of trying to auction off the property.
In other business, the following property owners were fined the amounts indicated for code violations at the following properties:
- Alan Kado of South Bend was fined $650 for violations at 939 E. Fort Wayne St.; $800 for violations at 304 S. Buffalo St.; and $1,000 for violations at 603 S. Columbia St. All of his fines are due immediately.
• Pat Rodgers, of Warsaw, was fined $500 for violations at 510 E. Center St. and $1,000 for violations at 209 S. Scott St. Both fines were postponed until April 26.
- Tom Buskirk, of Warsaw, was fined $1,000 for violations at 207 S. Scott St. The fine was postponed until May 17. He was also fined $1,000 for violations at 1017 E. Fort Wayne St. and apartment B in the building was condemned and ordered immediately vacated.
- DeWayne Busz, of Warsaw, was ordered to immediately demolish the free-standing garage at 317 N. Union St. [[In-content Ad]]
