"I firmly believe we need a Victims Service Center in Warsaw, but the Winona Avenue location was not conducive to the services we provide and we are ready to move the center to the next level," Hunter said.
Hunter said the Winona Avenue location was not well-lit at night for those seeking services.
He said the goal is to eventually partner with other agencies to develop a centralized location where victims of domestic abuse and sexual assault can continue to receive assistance.
The center will keep its hours of Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the new WPD location. The center provides crisis counseling, referrals and public education on issues of victimization.
The Victims Assistance program began in January 1996.
Becky Moreno, who has served as the center's coordinator for 13 years, said the center has been at its 600 E. Winona Ave. location for 10 years.
Moreno said temporarily moving the center to WPD is one step closer in developing a location where victims can obtain more services in one area.
Moreno can be contacted at the WPD at 574-372-9539 or by e-mail at [email protected]

In other business, the board approved Warsaw Fire Department accepting an assistance to a firefighters grant.
On March 20, the board granted the fire department permission to apply for the assistance to firefighters grant.
The department was awarded a $67,500 "Safer Grant" sponsored by the Federal Department of Homeland Security. The grant was applied for to secure funds to purchase an exhaust system to be installed in each of the fire stations, according to Warsaw Fire Chief Mike Rice.
The system is used to capture and evacuate dangerous exhaust fumes from the trucks to the outside. The system also will increase heating efficiency at the stations by reducing the time the overhead doors must remain open to clear the air before closing, Rice said.
The board also approved a request from Indiana Fiber Network to run a fiber optics line from McKinley Street to Menards and require a letter of credit for $150,000 to cover unforeseen damages.
