MENTONE - Vernon C. "Mumps" Meredith, 79, of 5504 S. CR 700W, Burket, died suddenly at 10:59 a.m. Dec. 17, 2008, in Lutheran Hospital, Fort Wayne.

He was born April 15, 1929, in Kosciusko County, to Harry A. and Dessie Newell Meredith. On Nov. 4, 1950, in Akron, he married Marcella J. Dickey, who survives.

He retired from Sonoco Paper Products Co., Akron, where he drove truck for many years. He was a 1947 Beaver Dam High School graduate and a member of American Legion, Warsaw; the Tippecanoe Valley School Board; Sonoco Old Timers Club; Sonoco Million Mile Club; and Kosciusko County Democrats. He attended many auctions and loved Purdue University sports. He was always there for his children.

Also surviving are a daughter, Melinda (and spouse Jim) Webb, Claypool; a son, Marlin (and spouse Londa) Meredith, Cicero; four grandchildren, Natasha, Cameron, Colin and Veronica Meredith; and a sister, Jane Evans, Warsaw. He was preceded in death by a son, James Meredith; a sister, Willodean Snow; and three brothers, Bill, Tom and Richard Meredith.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at King Memorial Home, 101 N. Tucker St., Mentone, with Pastor Rodney Ruberg officiating. Burial will be in Nichols Cemetery, Akron, with military graveside right by members of Warsaw American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Calling is from 3 to 7 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
