SOUTH WHITLEY - Verda J. Austin, 80, of South Whitley, died Oct. 22, 2008, in Lutheran Hospital, Fort Wayne.

She was born Aug. 25, 1928, in Ada, Okla., to William and Minnie Dykes Mullinax. On March 30, 1945, he married Jack DeFoe Austin, who died Jan. 15, 1974.

She graduated from Classen High School, Oklahoma City, Okla., and worked at Whitley Products; W.J. Carey Construction, Dr. Park Huffman from 1959-77; and Dr. James Hanus until her retirement.

Surviving are four children: Terry Austin, North Manchester; Jeanne Smith, Columbia City; Robert (and spouse Jennifer) Austin, Fort Wayne; and Diane (and spouse Fred) Parkinson, Warsaw; 12 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and a sister, Sylvia McGlamery, Midwest City, Okla. She was preceded in death by three brothers and a sister.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Smith & Sons Funeral Home, Miller Chapel, South Whitley. Burial will be in South Whitley Cemetery.

Calling is from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.
