MONTICELLO -ÊExciting would be one word to describe Saturday's Twin Lakes Regional as the Tippecanoe Valley girls basketball team won the semifinal over Calumet Saturday morning 60-41.

Crazy would be another as a snow storm rolled in, a dog took over the court and the Vikings fell to Highland 59-46 in Saturday night's regional final game.

While the Vikings held control of the game against Calumet from the opening tip-off, the game against Highland was not quite as simple.

Kara Kramer opened the regional final with a steal and dished the ball off the Kathy Prater for a basket to put the Vikings up 2-0, but the game was far from over.

Highland's Julie DeMuth answered with a basket of her own, and the race was on.

At the 5:55 mark, DeMuth hit a free throw to give Highland its first lead of the game.

But that lead did not last long as Kramer hit a basket to restore Valley's lead.

With just 2:53 left in the first frame, Valley's Rebekah Parker netted a three-point goal to give the Vikings their largest lead of the game, 12-9, but Highland fought right back.

By the end of the first stanza, the Trojans had regained the lead, 15-14.

The nail-biting action continued in the second quarter.

Holly Green netted the first basket of the second quarter and followed with a free throw to give Valley a 17-15 lead.

The teams traded baskets until the 5:14 mark when Highland began to make a run. The Trojans scored four straight baskets to take a 23-19 advantage, their biggest lead of the game.

However, the Vikings refused to give in.

Rebekah Parker hit two baskets and two free throws to outscore Highland 6-2 in the final 3:30 of the second frame and tied the score at 25-all at the halftime break.

"We played a great first half," said Valley coach Gary Teel. "We stayed with them and played well."

Highland's DeMuth kicked into gear in the third frame. She scored the first six points of the second half and helped lead her team to a 34-25 advantage before Valley netted a basket.

Highland held Valley scoreless until Kathy Prater hit a basket at the 4:17 mark in the third frame.

At the 2:22 mark the Vikings were down 41-30 and Highland had possession of the ball when a stray dog ran into the gym and onto the floor as the game was in progress. The clock stopped and the dog was corralled and taken off the court.

But even with the distraction, the Vikings struggled through the third quarter, scoring just five points to Highland's 20, and found themselves down 45-30 going into the final quarter of play.

Highland outscored Valley 8-5 in the first several minutes of the fourth frame, but the Vikings refused to give up.

Kara Kramer drained a three-point basket at the 3:18 mark to fire up the Vikings, but Highland scored six straight points to make the score 59-38 with just 1:51 left in the game.

Valley scored the last eight points of the game, but it was not enough to overcome the deficit built in the third frame.

"Highland got on a run early in the third quarter," said Teel. "We called a couple timeouts, but we just couldn't get our shots to go down. Highland was tough to stop. They buried us in that third quarter."

Parker, who left the game with an ankle injury for part of the fourth quarter, led the Vikings with 28 points. She was the only Viking to put out a double-figure scoring effort.

Highland's DeMuth led all scorers with 30 points, while Jessica Hamman added 10 points.

The Vikings end the season 22-3, while Highland advances to the Plymouth Semistate Saturday.
