Valley Wins Ugly Over John Glenn
July 28, 2016 at 4:25 p.m.
AKRON -ÊIt wasn't pretty, but it was a win.
The Tippecanoe Valley boys basketball team picked up a 59-44 win over John Glenn Saturday night, but that's about the only thing it could be happy about. And after seeing his team coach Bill Patrick was hardly happy about that.
"We had two kids who showed up to play," said Patrick. "Trey Eaton and Brandon Cody were ready to play, and they played hard. In fact we won the game because of those two. The others were just not mentally ready to play."
The turning point of the game came in Valley's 30-point fourth quarter. Going into the final period of play, Glenn held a 34-29 lead.
Ross Stutzman hit two free throws and a field goal to put the Vikings within one, 34-33, to open the quarter. Then Eaton hit a basket to give Valley its first lead since the second quarter.
The Vikings went on to hit 16 of 21 free throws in the last quarter and outscore the Falcons 30-10, to pick up the 59-44 win.
"We played stronger in the fourth quarter," said Patrick. "We got a bit of mileage from our man-to-man full-court press and our half-court traps. We got a few steals and some easy baskets."
Eaton led all scorers with 28 points, while Alex Frantz added 10.
"Defensively, we were not strong," said Patrick. "We did not move the ball well. We had a lot of unforced turnovers.
"I am very disappointed with the play in this game. We played three solid games in a row, and then tonight we come back and play the way we played the first game. I don't know if it was because we beat Plymouth Tuesday and we were just flat tonight. I really don't know.
Korey Pulluaim had 14 points for Glenn, and his teammate Greg Engel added 11.
The win moves Valley's record to 4-1. The Vikings play Whitko Friday in South Whitley.
NOTES: Eaton's free throw streak ended in Saturday's game. He hit 51 straight before missing one in the fourth quarter, shattering the old school record. In all, Eaton was 17 of 18 from the charity stripe ... John Glenn was called for two technical fouls in the fourth quarter - one on Pulluaim and one on Sheaks ...Casey Wise had to leave the game in the fourth quarter after catching an elbow. Wise left the court with blood running down his face. Blaine Hartzler shot Wise's free throws, and Wise had to get stitches after the game.

Tiger Boys Win Fourth Straight
By Dale Hubler, Times-Union Sports Writer
MISHAWAKA - Playing in a gymnasium known as The Palace, it was Warsaw's varsity boys basketball team that reigned in the second half Saturday, using a key third-quarter run and downing the Penn Kingsmen.
Trailing host Penn 27-20 at the break, the Tigers opened the second half with a 15-2 run, taking a 35-29 lead en rout to their 50-45 win.
The win was the fourth straight for Warsaw, which is now 4-1. Penn, last year's 4A state runner-up, graduated four starters from a year ago and sits at 0-4.
"In the third quarter we came out and had better execution in our half-court offense," Warsaw coach Al Rhodes said. "We got the ball inside to (Ryan) DeGeeter, (Erik) Fussle and (Jerad) Shaw, and we were able to get some fouls on them."
For Rhodes, who grew up near Penn High School and graduated from there in 1970, it was a sweet homecoming, though it didn't start that way.
Warsaw knotted the game at 5 early when senior Jerad Shaw drained a three-pointer, but with the aid of three consecutive threes and an Adam Cramer field goal, Penn took a 16-5 lead.
Penn was 4 of 5 from the arc in the first quarter, including a 3-of-3 effort from 6-foot-1 junior Josh DeLoddere.
"Penn shot so well in the first quarter and we weren't being assertive enough on defense," Rhodes said. "(DeLoddere) surprised me. He played an outstanding game."
Before fouling out, DeLoddere scored a game-high 18 points. Six-foot-8 senior center Eric Berger added eight, while junior Bryan Harrell added six.
After outscoring the Kingsmen 17-7 in the third quarter to take a 37-34 lead, Warsaw opened the final frame with a Chris Clay three-pointer and a field goal from Shaw for an eight-point advantage.
Penn closed the gap to 46-44 when Cramer hit the first of two free throws with 43 seconds left, but Tiger senior Greg Clay hit a pair of charity tosses four seconds later to push the lead back to four.
A DeLoddere free throw with 18 seconds left cut the Warsaw advantage to three, 48-45, but Greg Clay again hit a pair of free throws for Warsaw, this time with 14 seconds remaining.
In a game that was stopped twice for blood - once for Ryan DeGeeter's eye and once for DeLoddere's nose, it was Warsaw's 6-5 DeGeeter that got the best of Penn's 6-8 Berger.
Countering Berger's eight points, DeGeeter led Warsaw with 13 points, while Greg Clay added 12. Senior point guard Brad Seiss added seven, five of which came during the Tigers' 15-2 run. Both Chris Clay and Shaw scored six points in the win.
"Penn kept fighting and working hard," Rhodes said. "I'm very pleased to come away with a win, especially the way we started."
The game was just the second trip to Penn for Warsaw in its 20-plus years under Rhodes. Under current NorthWood coach Dan Gunn, Penn downed the Tigers in 1983.
Warsaw will host Northern Lakes Conference opponent Wawasee Friday and Elkhart Central Saturday.

Area Swimmers Fare Well At Wawasee Invitational
By Mike Madison, TImes-Union Sports Correspondent
SYRACUSE -ÊIt's not often after a high school athletic event that all the coaches involved are satisfied with the outcome, but that appeared to be the case Saturday after the Wawasee Girls Swim Invitational.
From top to bottom, most all the participating coaches on Saturday seemed satisfied with the results of their girls.
Wawasee's Roger Karns said, "As we get into the season we needed a barometer as to where we are and I think today was a good indication of that. I am real pleased."
And he should have been pleased as Wawasee took advantage of its depth to capture the first-place trophy with 340 points, well ahead of second-place Angola with 215 points.
The race for second was a very close one as only 23 points separated second-place Angola and fifth-place East Noble.
In third place with 204 points was DeKalb followed by Tippecanoe Valley with 195 and East Noble with 191. Rochester was next with 112 followed by Fort Wayne North Side with 95 and Manchester with 43.
Wawasee jumped off to a big lead in the morning when sophomore Libby Brown, freshman Jennifer Sands, and sophomore Megan Medlock went two-three-four in the diving.
"That was big for us," said Karns, "To go two-three-four was just great."
Manchester's Abby Zerkel was pleased with her divers as well. "This was the first meet in which our divers had competed and they did very well."
Wawasee's depth showed early when the Warriors placed two relay teams in the top five in the day's first event, the 200 medley relay.
In the 200 freestyle it was Tippecanoe Valley's Alyssa Anglin setting the pace. She took first place, blistering the field with a time of 2:08:19, a full six seconds ahead of Wawasee's Diane Jackson.
Wawasee again had two of the top five finishers, going two and five while Valley placed first and seventh.
Wawasee stretched its lead when Sarah Marty and Amber Lyon had a two-three finish in the 100 butterfly. Anglin again picked up big points for Valley when she took a second in the 100 freestyle with a 57:25, just a quarter of a second off first and a full two seconds better than her previous best time.
Elyse Boggs picked up another second for Valley when she went for 5:39:24 in the 500 freestyle.
Boggs came right back in the next event, the 200 freestyle relay, and teamed with Anglin, Valerie Drudge and Linda Weller for another second place finish. They finished one second ahead of Wawasee's Diane Jackson, Tasha Harper, Lisa Gunderson, and Sarah Marty who were third.
The next event was the 100 backstroke. If there was any doubt to the outcome of this meet, it was settled as Wawasee took first, third and fourth in the event.
Liz White swam a 1:07:00 personal best to take the win. Libby Brown was third and Rebekah Judy was fourth. Valley's Valerie Drudge was next in fifth place.
Tippy Valley came right back and in the day's last event and took another first when Anglin, Drudge, Weller and Boggs swam a 4:02:83 in the 400 freestyle relay. Again Wawasee's depth came through as the Warriors swam to a third and fifth.
Tippecanoe Valley coach, Steve Doerscher complimented his team after the effort, "I am real pleased with what we did today. We had a lot of best times. We had two firsts and I was really pleased with Boggs as she took second in the 500 with her second best swim ever in that event and Anglin's 100 freestyle time was her best."
