The ninth-ranked Lady Vikings won a pair of overtime games at Bellmont High School on Saturday to claim the school’s first-ever regional title. First they beat Muncie Central 50-41 in the semifinal, then downed Norwell 49-47 to take the title.
Valley has now won three overtime games in its five-game postseason win streak. The Lady Vikings beat NorthWood in double overtime in the Wawasee sectional semifinal on Feb. 13.
The Norwell game had more keys than a custodian’s belt. Valley held Norwell to just 12 field goals on the night, out of 61 attempts (19.7 percent). But eight of the Lady Knight’s made shots were three-pointers, allowing them to stay in the game.
The Lady Vikings also had to survive some issues, including missing the front end of one-and-ones from the free throw line twice in the last 36 seconds, and turning the ball over near mid-court with 2.6 seconds left in regulation.
Valley scored the first six points of overtime, including a traditional three-point play from Anne Secrest. and seemed to be in control. But Norwell’s Hanna Smith hit two treys in the last 20 seconds of the game, including one that bounced on the rim twice before falling, to draw the Lady Knights within one.
Caylie Teel was fouled with 3.6 seconds left, and she hit the second of two free throws to extend Valley’s lead to two. Norwell got the ball into the front court but didn’t get a shot off, setting off a wild celebration among those in green and yellow.
“It seems like we’re a team of destiny,” Valley coach Chris Kindig said. “The girls just made plays. They really came together these last two to three weeks; really throughout the season they’ve been close, but in the last couple of weeks they’ve become much closer and are really playing for each other as well as for our community. That’s really hard to beat.
“We got great contributions from everybody tonight, and they played extremely hard. That was a very good Norwell team that had the idea they were going to come out of this regional.”
Kindig said Norwell’s postseason experience was a point of concern.
“I was a little bit worried about Norwell because they’ve been here several times. They’re experienced and know how to react to these types of situations. At times, it showed, especially in the fourth quarter.
“But our girls showed guts and determination, and they didn’t want to be denied. It’s been a special run, but you know what? We’d like to win a couple of more. We really would.”
The next step for Tippecanoe Valley is taking on a familiar foe on a neutral court close to home. They have a semistate matchup with Rochester at 6 p.m. Saturday in Warsaw’s Tiger Den. Valley beat its Three Rivers Conference rival 52-40 on Jan.17 in Akron in a game that decided the conference title..
“I was joking with Tony (Rochester head coach Stesiak) and told him ‘we’ll see you in Warsaw,’” Kindig said. “We’re going to get another shot at them, they’re going to get another shot at us. They’re a very familiar opponent, and we know each other pretty well. I don’t think we’ll have to watch as much tape this week. It should be a heck of a game.”

Muncie Central’s Jayla Scaife, the University of Dayton commit, went to the free throw line with 1.3 seconds left in regulation and Valley up 40-39. She hit only the second free throw, and Valley went on to capture a 50-41 overtime win in the semifinals.
Valley’s Anne Secrest had 17 points and 10 rebounds before fouling out in the overtime. Taylor Trippiedi came up big in the extra period with six of her 11 points, and the Lady Vikings went 6 of 8 from the charity stripe in overtime.
Valley led most of the first half, by as many as seven points, but Muncie Central chipped away until it took a 34-30 lead early in the fourth quarter. Valley held Central to a single field goal, and that came on a Valley turnover under the Bearcat basket, over the last 5:32 of regulation and all of overtime.
Scaife finished with 17 points and 10 boards. Valley’s Brynda Krueger had eight points off the bench, including a 6-of-6 effort at the free throw line. Caylie Teel had seven points for Valley, which enjoyed a 22-6 advantage over Central at the charity stripe.
