Valley Wins 10th Straight TRC Game
July 28, 2016 at 4:25 p.m.
AKRON - While the officiating crew was absent Friday evening, Tippecanoe Valley's varsity football team certainly showed up Saturday.
Hosting Three Rivers Conference rival Southwood, a game that was postponed a day because the officiating crew never showed up to the school Friday, the Vikings dominated the Knights in a 35-0 win at Death Valley.
The Vikings were impressive on both offense and defense in the win, a victory that improved them to 2-2 overall and 2-0 in the TRC, their only downfall was eight penalties for a total of 80 yards.
Valley's first penalty of the game negated a 53-yard punt return for a touchdown by sophomore Chad Hoffer in the first quarter.
"I was disappointed with the penalties," said 16th-year Valley coach Scott Bibler. "That set us back offensively. We're so excited about special teams. We want to score so bad on special teams. It's been a while since we've scored a special teams touchdown. That's one thing we're trying to get accomplished."
While the Vikings didn't score a touchdown with their special teams play, Valley's offense had little trouble scoring.
Senior quarterback Bryce Kelley scored Valley's first touchdown of the game, rushing in from nine yards out with 7:32 remaining in the first quarter.
Fifteen seconds into the second quarter, Kelley put the Vikings on the board again, this time using his strong right arm to connect on an 86-yard touchdown pass with classmate Jerrod Parker, who added the extra-point kick for a 14-0 lead.
Nick Young scored on a three-yard run with 7:19 left in the first half, and then Aaron Reed ran in the two-point conversion for a 22-0 Valley lead.
Kelly closed out the first-half scoring with a 13-yard run with 4:05 left. The extra-point kick attempt failed and Valley led 28-0 at halftime.
"Bryce is taking command of the offense," Bibler said of the 6-foot-2, 179-pound senior. "His confidence is growing. He wants the ball in his hands. He's got confidence in the line. He's a hard-nosed kid. There was a couple pitch plays where he was out there as the lead blocker."
Kelley finished the game with six carries for 35 yards and two touchdowns. He threw for 165 yards and one touchdown, completing 5 of 9 passes for 165 yards.
Five different Vikings made receptions in the game, with Parker's touchdown catch leading the way. Hoffer and Reed each had a 28-yard catch, while Kyle Brown had an 11-yard reception and Young a 10-yard catch.
Young led Valley's rushing attack with 13 carries for 76 yards, while Parker tallied 42 yards on eight carries.
Nine Vikings rushed the ball in the win, racking up 165 yards on 40 carries, an average of 4.1 yards per carry.
Defensively, Valley held Southwood to 69 yards rushing. Southwood junior quarterback Spencer Dawson completed 3 of 16 passes for nine yards. He threw one interception, an errant pass that was picked off by Kelley and returned 50 yards to Southwood's 45-yard line.
Matt Jasen led Southwood's running game with 15 carries for 63 yards.
The loss dropped Southwood to 0-4 overall and 0-2 in conference play.
Valley, on the other hand, moved its conference winning streak to 10 games.
The Vikings have won their two conference games this season by a combined score of 86-0.
"For the most part, we're making strides," said Bibler. "We're getting better. The defense is hitting better. We're starting to come around. This was a good win at home. Our TRC win streak is at 10. We're hoping to get better each week."
Valley ran the table in the TRC last year, posting a 7-0 record. The Vikings' last loss in the conference was a 22-21 setback to North Miami in the 2003 season.
Valley will play for its 11th straight conference win Friday at Northfield.
