AKRON -ÊAll good things must end, and Saturday night the Triton Trojans learned that the hard way.

For the Trojans, the good thing was their five-game win streak. And the end was caused by the Tippecanoe Valley Vikings.

The Vikings defeated the Trojans 70-61 Saturday night in Akron.

The win marks Valley's 10th consecutive win, and this is the first time the Vikings have beat Triton in three years.

Triton struck first offensively in this matchup of streaking teams. However, Valley was not down for long. Triton's Brandon Zeider hit 1 of 2 free throws to start the game and give the Trojans a 1-0 advantages. Then Valley moved down the court and Noah Silveus sank a three-pointer to put the Vikings up 3-1.

At the 5:30 point in the first frame, the score was knotted at 5-5. But not for long.

In the last five minutes of the first quarter, Valley went on a 12-4 run to build an 18-9 lead going into the second stanza.

Valley held that lead throughout the second quarter, allowing Triton to get within nine points but no further. By the end of the first half, the Vikings were up 33-24.

"We really played different than last night (at Bremen)," said Valley coach Bill Patrick. "We played solid defense in the first quarter, but it went downhill from there."

However, in the third quarter, the Trojans started knocking on Valley's door.

Brandon Zeider hit the first basket of the second half with 7:45 on the third quarter clock. That basket fueled a 12-4 Triton run in the first three minutes of the third frame that brought the Trojans within one, 37-36.

"The big thing was that we had to run our game at our tempo," said Triton coach Joe Bennett. "We did not want to let them get in their fast break offense. When they can do that, they are awfully good."

As quickly as Triton knocked at the door, Valley slammed it shut. The Vikings plugged away, and by the end of the quarter had regained a four-point lead, 46-42.

Through the fourth quarter, Valley continued to add to its lead by capitalizing on Triton fouls. In the final quarter of play, Triton was called for eight fouls while Valley was called for just three. The Vikings stepped to the line for 15 charity shots and nailed 13 of them. Brandon Eaton was 6-of-6 shooting from the charity stripe to lead the Vikings in the final stanza.

The Valley squad outscored the Trojans 24-19 in the last quarter to finish the game with a 70-61 victory.

Valley's Cody New led all scorers with 22 points on 8-of-11 shooting from the field and 3-of-3 shooting from the free throw line. New's teammate, Brandon Eaton, added 20 points in the win. Eaton was 4 of 10 from the field and 10 of 11 from the free throw line and pulled down eight rebounds. Brandon's brother, Trey, pulled down eight rebounds as well.

"Cody had a nice game," said Patrick. "This is the first game he has started, and he has fit in well. He had to earn his spot in the starting lineup.

"He plays well with the other kids. He shoots well, rebounds well and his defense is getting much better."

Jake Burnett had a hot hand for Triton. He netted 18 points on 7-of-7 shooting and pulled down two rebounds. Brandon Zeider hit 5 of 13 shots from the field and 5 of 6 free throws for 17 points.

"Jake Burnett played very well off the bench tonight," said Bennett. "I am very proud of all the kids tonight."

Triton is now 10-6 overall while Tippecanoe Valley improves to 14-3. Valley will battle Oak Hill for sole possession of first place in the Three Rivers Conference Thursday while Triton will play Knox for the third-place spot in the Northern State Conference Thursday as well.

"Overall this was a good team effort," said Patrick. "Triton is a good ball club. They shoot well, and they play hard. They are a very solid team."

"We dug a hole for ourselves early," said Bennett. "When you play against a good team like Tippecanoe Valley at their place, you just have to put the writing on the wall. I have to give Valley credit. They are a very solid team."
