AKRON -ÊAs the National Anthem played over the speakers in Tippecanoe Valley High School's gym Thursday night, Viking senior Rebekah Parker could barely stand still.

"I thought she was ging to jump out of her skin," said Valley coach Gary Teel. "All the girls were that way. They were ready to get out there and play. There was a lot of that first-game adrenaline out there."

The Vikings overcame that first-game adrenaline to pick up a 70-56 win over Bremen.

But it was Bremen that held the lead much of the first quarter. After trading baskets for the first five minutes of play, Bremen made a 9-4 run to take a 17-12 lead at the 1:30 mark.

However, two baskets by Parker evened the score at 17-all to end the first quarter.

Then Parker opened the second frame with a three-pointer and a field goal, followed by a three-pointer by Abby Shafer to put Valley up 25-17.

Bremen clawed its way back into the game, and two free throws by Valerie Bollenbacher knotted the score at 35-all with 53.2 ticks left in the first half.

In the final 30 seconds of the second quarter, Kara Kramer and Parker each scored baskets, while Bremen's Jamie Klinge hit a free throw. Valley took a 39-36 lead into the halftime break.

Bremen cut Valley's advantage to one when Klinge hit the first basket of the second half, but the Vikings never lost hold of the lead in the second half.

The Vikings kicked into gear in the third frame and outscored Bremen 24-10, thanks to a 10-0 run in the final 1:57 of the quarter.

Valley held a 63-46 advantage at the end of the third quarter, but the Vikings were called for a technical foul before a second could tick off the fourth-quarter clock. The Valley squad had six players on the floor after a bit of confusion on the bench, leading to the technical foul.

Kaci Disher netted both foul shots, and Brittany Lechlitner hit a three-pointer to make the score 63-51.

Then Shafer and Jenna McFadden make a run for Valley, scoring six straight points and give the Vikings a 69-51 with 6:47 left on the clock.

In the final minutes of play, Bremen outscored Valley 5-1, but the Lions were unable to overcome the Viking lead.

"This game was a good starter for us," said Teel. "Bremen is a strong team, and they are going to win a lot of games."

Parker led all scorers with 26 points, while Kramer added 23. Shafer netted 13 points in the Viking win.

"For us to be successful this season, I told Rebekah we are going to ned her to average in the 20s in scoring and she did that tonight," said Teel. "Abby and Kara played very well, too. It was a good first game."

The victory makes Valley's record 1-0. The Vikings hit the court again next Friday when they host area rival Warsaw.
