AKRON -Ê"We're gunning for a good season," said Tippecanoe Valley No. 2 singles player Zach Shambaugh.
With a 5-0 win over John Glenn Wednesday afternoon, the Vikings proved they are determined to have that good season.
"John Glenn lost three strong positions from last year," said Valley coach Rob Hamman. "This is really a rebuilding year for them."
But the Vikings entered Wednesday's match ready to play.
"Our guys came out focused tonight, and that's important," said Hamman. The main thing for us was not to have a let-down. We came out with intensity and focus and played well. A match can get away from you if you play down a level, but our players came out and took care of business."
In the first match to finish, Stu Jackson teamed up with Robby Hamman in the No. 1 doubles match against Glenn's Tom Buysse and Gary Jaworski. Jackson and Hamman joined forces to blank the Falcons in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0.
Then Shambaugh finished his match in the No. 2 singles slot. Shambaugh faced off against Glenn's Doug Buysse and picked up a 6-0, 6-0 win.
"I felt that overall I played well," said Shambaugh. "I placed my shots well and played metally tough."
In the No. 2 doubles match, Vikings James Makula and Aaron Foster challenged Aaron Moelich and Josh O'Hara. Makula and Foster allowed Glenn to win just one point in the match and picked up a 6-0, 6-1 victory.
Valley's Keith Kindig took on Glenn's Kevin Knape at the No. 2 singles battle. Knape captured two points in the match, losing to Kindig 6-0, 6-2.
In the longest match of the night, Valley's No. 1 singles player Sam Vanlaningham faced off against Glenn's Anthony Norton. After winning the first set 6-0, Vanlaningham took a 3-0 lead in the second set.
However, Norton fought back to make the score 4-3 before Vanlaningham finished the set with a 6-4 win.
"I am really pleased with our senior leadership," said Hamman. "We have a great group of seniors (Sam Vanlaningham, Zach Shambaugh and Stu Jackson), and they help our younger guys improve as well. This group is really a lot of fun."
The win put Valley at 5-2 on the season. The Vikings hit the court again Wednesday when they host Knox.
