NORTH MANCHESTER -ÊGoing into Thursday's volleyball match, Manchester and Tippecanoe Valley were undefeated in the Three Rivers Conference. After last night's match in North Manchester, Valley left the match with a 2-0 TRC record after beating the Squires 15-6, 15-12.
In the first game of the match, Manchester jumped out to an early 2-1 lead after Joni West and Megan Goshert served up the first Squire points. Then Valley's Lynette Wilcox led the Vikings to five straight points and a 6-2 lead.
The Vikings would not relinquish the lead for the remainder of the match as Kyleigh Gast, Lacey Stump, Inga Vandermark and Jamie Doud combined for the last nine Valley points. Valley took the game 15-6.
"I have a lot of good things to say about our team," said Valley coach Jon Parker. "The girls work together and are very team-oriented. I am very proud of them."
However, Valley did not have such an easy time in the second game. After several possession changes, Valley scored the first point of the match. The Vikings went up 5-2, but the Squires staged a comeback.
Carrie White served up two points to put the Manchester squad within one, 5-4. After a Valley sideout on the Viking serve, Manchester's Jenny Brubaker stepped to the line and led the Squires to four straight points to give them an 8-5 advantage.
Valley's Kim Carr refused to give in, and on the next Viking possession she served up five points, giving Valley a 10-8 lead. Later Jamie Doud and Wilcox each added a point of their own to increase the Viking lead to 12-10, but Manchester's West led the Squires to two more points to knot the score at 12.
Kyleigh Gast moved in to serve for Valley, making the score 14-12, and after several more possession changes with no score, the Vikings nailed the last point to win the match 15-12 and retain their undefeated TRC record.
"We just decided to play a little too late," said Tate. "We started to play like I know we can near the end of the match. Valley played a good game. They are a sound team as far as fundamentals are concerned."
"This was a great game," said Parker. "We knew coming in that Manchester was a good team. They beat us last year, and they always have a strong TRC record. In fact, if you look back, I think they have beaten us more than we have beaten them. They play hard every game."
Valley improves to 12-3 and 2-0 in the TRC while Manchester is now 5-12 overall and 1-1 in the TRC.
