NORTH MANCHESTER -ÊCookies and milk. Peanut butter and jelly. Hamburgers and french fries.

All themselves, but better when they are together.

Much like Tippecanoe Valley girls basketball players Rebekah Parker and Abby Shafer. In Parker's first game back from a knee injury, Shafer led the 3A No. 4 Vikings in scoring with 21 points.

"Abby and Rebekah work very well together," said Valley coach Gary Teel. "Abby had a tremendous game. She was the catalyst in the game tonight. Whe both abby and Rebekah are on the court together, it is a totally different ball game."

The duo of Shafer and Parker helped lead the Vikings to a 61-50 win over Three Rivers Conference rival Manchester Saturday night in North Manchester.

In her first game back, Parker made her presence known early, scoring the first basket of the game at the 7:31 mark.

Karak Kramer followed with a three-pointer, and the Vikings were up 5-0.

Enter Manchester's Christa Peden. Peden hit back-to-back baskets as well as a free throw to knot the score at 5-all.

A Shafer three-pointer at the 4:58 mark sparked a 13-2 Valley run, putting the Vikings up 18-7 with 1:07 left in the first frame.

Casey Thomas hit two free throws and Britt Rager hit a basket to make the score 18-11 at the end of the first quarter.

Manchester's Megan Hoch hit a free throw to open the second quarter, and Valley's Kramer answered with a basket to make the score 20-12 in Valley's favor.

A basket and free throw by Squire freshman Audrey Siebrase started a 7-2 Manchester run that cut Valley's lead to three, 22-19.

However, five straight points by Shafer increased Valley's lead to eight, 27-19.

By the end of the quarter, Manchester had sliced the Viking lead to just three points, 29-26.

Shafer hit the first basket of the second half, but Manchester's Libby Pattison nailed a three-pointer to make the score 31-29 and cut Valley's lead to just two points.

Peden tied the score at 31-all with a basket at the 6:24 mark.

Then Shafer and Parker hit back-to-back baskets to restore the Viking advantage, 35-31.

By the end of the third frame, Valley increased it's lead to five, 44-39.

The Vikings padded their lead early in the fourth frame. Kramer and Shafer scored the first six points of the last stanza to put Valley up by 11, 50-39.

From that point, the Vikings never looked back. At one point, Manchester cut Valley's lead to nine but got no closer.

"We played with them for three quarters," said Manchester coach Mark Underwood. "Tippecanoe Valley is an outstanding basketball team, with or without Rebekah Parker. This game will help us prepare for the sectional."

Shafer led all scorers with 21 points, while Kramer added 17 and Parker had 15.

"We were glad to see Rebekah out there playing tonight," said Underwood. "It's always sad to see a player have to sit out part of her senior year. It's good to see her back."

Peden led the Squire scoring summary with 13 points, and Pattison scored 11 points for Manchester.

"We knew going into this game that Manchester had a good team," said Teel. "This is a tough place to play, and Coach Underwood had his kids ready to play."

The win moves Valley's record to 17-2 overall and 6-1 in Three Rivers Conference play. Manchester falls to 11-5 on the season and 5-2 in the TRC.
