Valley Tables Two Coach Recommendations

MENTONE - Age and parenthood led the Tippecanoe Valley School Board to table approving two coaching positions Monday night until their Dec. 10 meeting.

The school board was presented with a recommendation of hiring Tyler Fisher as an assistant baseball coach and John Strong as the softball coach. However, board member Bryan Murphy said he was concerned with hiring Fisher, and Secretary Rod Eaton was concerned with hiring Strong.[[In-content Ad]]"How old is Tyler Fisher? Nineteen, 20? I have a concern there," said Murphy.

He said Fisher has only been out of school for a couple of years and some of the players on the team now were in school with Fisher. Murphy asked who Fisher would be an assistant to. He said he didn't doubt Fisher would be a good coach, but he was concerned with "young folks leading young folks."

Eaton said his concern with Strong is having a parent (of a player) being a varsity coach. "It hasn't worked too well for us in the past," Eaton said.

Board President Mark Wise said he met a woman the other day who was interested in the softball coach position who didn't know it was available. She is dating Wise's nephew.

Asked if they could put off hiring the coaches, Assistant Superintendent Brett Boggs said it would be OK for baseball, but not so much for the softball coach position.

The school board unanimously voted to table the Fisher and Strong recommendations for a month.

n Approved the TVHS Coach Handbook with the addition that "appropriate language is an expectation at all times."

When the school board reviewed the handbook initially at the October meeting, Wise requested the addition.

n Heard the school corporation will finally get tax draws from both Fulton and Kosciusko counties this week.

TVSC lies partially in Fulton County. It includes Franklin, Harrison and Seward townships and the Burket, Mentone-Franklin and Mentone-Harrison taxing units. The state did not approve Fulton County's tax rates until October, and statements were mailed to TVSC property owners Oct. 22.

Property taxes are due today.

All other taxing units in Kosciusko County received their statements in early July with a first installment due Sept. 10 and the balance due today.

n Approved a statement of a financial goal for the school corporation.

In 2006, the Indiana General Assembly passed Public Law 191-2006 which encourages school corporations to undertake provisions to save money in non-academic areas. Part of the law also requires the school board to develop and approve a goal which will attempt to increase the school corporation's allocation of taxpayers' resources to directly impact student learning.

The goal approved by Valley states: TVSC will make every effort to 1.) Improve the ratio of student instructional expenditures to all other expenditures. 2.) Achieve financial stability by continuous monitoring of revenues and expenditures that promote student academic achievement and instructional support. 3.) Implement programs which utilize cooperative purchasing, outsourcing of facilities and operations, and development of collaborative efforts with other educational services to reduce overhead, operational and non-operational expenditures.

"I agree with them," said Murphy.

"The less said the better," said Eaton.

n Approved a revision to school board policy regarding salary and fringe benefits. Boggs said the statement is required for Valley to be in compliance with the Internal Revenue Service.

n Heard a report on how students did on the fall Northwest Evaluation Association testing. Overall, students in grades one through nine show growth, according to Curriculum Director Angela Miller and Testing Coordinator Lora Harp.

n Approved hiring Rebecca Dike as the sixth grade girls basketball coach at Tippecanoe Valley Middle School; Shaun Shepherd, seventh-grade boys basketball assistant coach at TVMS; and Dax Snyder, fifth-grade boys basketball coach at Mentone Elementary School.

n Approved for Reading Recovery and Early Literacy teachers to attend a conference Jan. 16-18 in Chicago.

n Approved for Kristen Horrell and June Yazel to attend the National Council of Teachers of English conference in New York City, N.Y.

n Approved the donation of a card catalog to the Mentone museum.

n Heard the next board meetings will be Dec. 10, 7:30 p.m., Mentone Elementary School; Jan. 21, 7:30 p.m., Burket Educational Center; and Feb. 12, 7:30 p.m., Tippecanoe Valley Middle School.
