In a tournament-like atmosphere, Tippecanoe Valley's varsity boys basketball team took the drivers seat in a battle of undefeated teams in Three River's Conference action.[[In-content Ad]]Despite being down at the end of the first quarter, Valley rallied and eventually ran away with a 76-61 victory over the Knights.
Valley remains the only unbeaten team in the conference, improving to 10-3 overall and 5-0 in TRC play. Southwood fell to 8-4 overall and 3-1 conference action.
Both teams entered the conference clash having won three games in a row.
"Southwood has a very athletic team and they are going to win a lot of ballgames before the year is out," said Valley coach Bill Patrick. "Their sectional is going to be wide open this year."
Shane Salyer led a balanced Valley attack with 21 points, 12 coming in the second half as the Vikings continued to build their lead. The 6-foot-7 senior was 9 of 15 from the field and highlighted his performance with a put-back dunk.
Senior Steven Tillman scored 18 for Valley, while classmates Ryan Scherzer and Chad Hoffer added 17 and 16 points, respectively.
Salyer, who pulled down eight rebounds, also had the job of stopping Southwood's Parker Stouffer in the middle.
"Salyer did a better job in the second half," said Patrick. "He put in a good defensive effort as well. Shane is nursing a sore ankle that slowed him down a little."
Valley ran the lead to 13 and Southwood cut the lead to eight, 59-51, with 3:11 left in the game but the Vikings outscored the Knights 17-10 the rest of the way.
"Southwood has a couple of good players," said Patrick. "You have Stauffer in the middle, who is just a force. You also have (Spencer) Krin, who is very athletic and can hit the good shots. They kept battling back and they cut the lead to eight late in the game. The only difference between them and us is we have all seniors."
Spencer Krin led all players with 21 points on 9-of-16 shooting from the field. Stauffer added 16 points and 10 rebounds.
"I am proud of the guys," said Patrick. "They put in a good effort defensively tonight. Southwood always plays a tough game and tonight was no different."
Valley used a combination of defenses to frustrate the Southwood offense. The Vikings forced the Knights into a woeful 23-of-61 shooting from the field.
The Vikings shot 50 percent in the game, finishing 26 of 52 from the field and 22 of 26 from the free throw line.
Tillman scored 14 of his 18 points in the second half, hitting 5 of 8 shots from the field and converting all four of his free throw attempts.
"It took a while for Tillman to get going but he scored what he normally does every game," said Patrick. "It was a team effort and each player stepped up when we needed them and they rose to the occasion."
The Vikings have eight of their last nine games.
Jared Harnish added 13 points and four rebounds for Southwood. Aaron Shaw scored six points for the Knights.
The Vikings are in action again Friday when they host rival Manchester. Southwood travels to North Miami Friday.
