AKRON - The class of the Three Rivers Conference met Friday in Akron, where the Tippecanoe Valley Vikings were 70-62 victors over the visiting Rochester Zebras.

The win leaves Valley with a 4-0 record in the TRC. Southwood, which beat Whitko 54-50 in overtime Friday, is the only other undefeated team in the TRC, sporting a 3-0 mark.[[In-content Ad]]"The TRC is not over, by any stretch," Valley coach Bill Patrick said. "I think you can win the TRC with one or two losses. The conference is tough. We still have Southwood, Manchester, North Miami - those three teams are solid basketball teams."

In Patrick's 10 seasons at Valley, the man with 651 career wins has won eight-straight TRC titles, sharing the honor only twice, the latest being with Rochester last season.

"We're in better shape than if we would have lost - that's for sure," Patrick said. "We don't have to count on anybody else. We can take care of things ourselves, if we do what we should be doing."

Last season, it was Rochester that was victorious over Valley in the regular season, but a conference loss later in the season drew a conference tie between the two rivals. That's the kind of outcome Rochester coach Rob Malchow would like to see happen again this year.

"I think the conference is as balanced as I have ever seen it," Malchow said of the TRC.

"There's probably five teams that are competing for a crack at either a share of the conference or winning it outright," he added. "We're in a position that Valley was in last year. We've got to seek a little help."

Against Valley, Malchow was looking for a little help in stopping the Vikings' "Big Three" - Chad Hoffer, Shane Salyer and Steven Tillman. The 6-7 Salyer scored a game-high 20 points, while Hoffer and Tillman contributed 18 and 14 points, respectively. The trio also led Valley in rebounding, a statistic that was led by Hoffer's eight, Tillman's seven and Salyer's six.

"We knew going in that those guys were good basketball players," Malchow said. "We just did not do a good job of keeping track of them - keeping them off the boards, especially."

With the game being telecasted as WHME's "Game of the Week," Hoffer opened the contest with a 5-of-5 shooting effort in the first quarter, scoring 11 points, while recording two steals, two rebounds and a blocked shot. Hoffer's hot shooting continued beyond the first quarter, going 8 of 8 on the night.

"I think he liked that TV (coverage)," Patrick said of Hoffer, who's most notable two points were via a two-handed breakaway dunk. "He was in the spotlight there."

While Hoffer was going off in the first quarter, Rochester's Bruce Grimm, Jr. was right with him. In the opening quarter, Grimm was 3 of 3 from the field, scoring nine of his game-high 20 points in those eight minutes.

"He's a good player," Patrick said about Grimm, who also had five steals. "He has good hands and anticipates very well."

With Hoffer and Grimm matching each other in the first, Rochester held a slim 21-19 lead going into the second quarter, when Salyer began to take over.

With Hoffer not even taking a shot in the second stanza, Salyer stepped up, scoring 11 in the period, turning a two-point deficit into a 40-34 halftime lead.

"I thought we really played solid in the first half," Patrick said. "We weren't necessarily going to give up the outside shot, we were going contest it, but we weren't going to get beat by the two big kids (Carter Walley and Brent Easterday) inside."

Rochester did hit seven three-pointers on the night, but Patrick was willing to give those up if it meant keeping Walley and Easterday quiet. In the championship game of the Winning Edge Holiday Tourney on Dec. 29 in Rochester, Walley and Easterday combined to score 27 points in a 62-48 win over Valley. Friday night, the two combined to score five points.

"If we were going to get beat, we were going to get beat with outside shooting," Patrick said.

After the half, Valley inched its lead up in the third quarter, led by eight points from Tillman on 4 of 4 shooting. With Tillman presenting yet another offensive threat for Valley, Rochester found itself down 51-42 late in the quarter, and that nine-point deficit was as close as it would get the rest of the way. Only when Zebra Brody Schoen hit a three-pointer with 12 seconds left in the game did Rochester get the deficit under nine, resulting in the 70-62 final score.

Beating Rochester was big in the way of winning the TRC this season, but Valley will look to take sole possession of the conference Friday when they travel to Southwood for a 6:15 junior varsity tipoff.
