MENTONE - On a night when a number of the top teams in the state struggled, Valley sent out a message. That message was that the Vikings are no pushover, especially at Death Valley. After taking a thumping to Rochester 38-6 last week, Valley came home and dominated from beginning to end in defeating North Miami 43-6 on Friday night.
Despite receiving one of the best sectional draws that Valley could hope for, the Vikings showed that they aren't just sitting back and relaxing. Valley put 21 points on the board in the first quarter without leading rusher Anthony Simpson and continued to add to that throughout for a win against once the once ranked Warriors.
Valley set the tone early after starting the first drive of the game at its own 31 yard line. Jason Parker took the first play from scrimmage 69 yards and Valley led 7-0 just 16 seconds into the game.
Then the Vikings set the tone on defense, forcing North Miami into a three-and-out situation as the Warriors punted the ball away.
Two possessions later, Valley put together another quick scoring drive with runs of 11, 20, 2 and 15 yards to get the ball to the 11 yard line. Then Parker scored his second touchdown of the game on the ground to double the lead.
On North Miami's third possession, the Warriors began to show some signs of life offensively, but that fell apart in a hurry. North Miami got its first first down of the game, but the drive stalled at the Warriors 34 yard line. On the punt, Charlie Wise got through the line to block the kick, scooped up the loose ball, and trotted 34 yards for the touchdown as Valley went ahead 21-0.
In the second quarter, Valley continued to pour it on. The Vikings started a drive at their own 47 yard line and quarterback Brandon Eaton connected with Matt Baker for a 52 yard strike to the one yard line. Coach Scott Bibler rewarded Baker by giving him the ball on the next play and he ran into the endzone for a 27-0 lead after the extra point sailed wide.
North Miami got its only score on the next possession, a 12 play drive that culminated in a three yard plunge by Whitney Stump to make the score 27-6. The Warriors went for the two point conversion, but was stuffed.
After the North Miami touchdown, it looked as if Parker had struck again, but his kick-off return for a touchdown was called back because of holding. However, it wasn't long before he had another long run that did hold up.
On the next possession, Parker took his only carry of the second quarter 63 yards to paydirt as the Vikings went ahead 34-6.
Valley tacked on another touchdown in the third quarter after a fumble gave the Vikings the ball at the North Miami 12 yard line. Eric Prater scored two plays later from six yards out as the Vikings went ahead 40-6. Then, later in the third quarter, Nathan Moore accomplished a rare feat for Valley football. His 34 yard field goal to close out the scoring late in the third quarter was the first successful attempt since the 1995 playoffs against NorthWood.
For the game, Jason Parker carried the ball eight times for 172 yards and three touchdowns. He averaged an amazing 21.5 yards per carry. With top running back Anthony Simpson out of the game with a concussion, those numbers were magnified even more."
"I think he had an outstanding football game," Bibler said. "He had the kickoff return called back that could have been a touchdown there. Boy, did he really come to play. He gets the glory and the credit, but also out offensive line, they don't get enough credit. From left to right, (Micah) Lukens, (Jeremy) Fox, (Charlie) Wise, (Phil) Prater and (John) Eastwood did a nice job out there."
Sophomore Craig Kuhn came into the game late in the third quarter at quarterback and did a solid job, completing five of six passes for 81 yards.
"We didn't really want to pass the ball much because of the score," Bibler said. "We didn't want to make it look bad. He threw some short stuff. I've said it before, those quarterbacks (Eaton and Kuhn) are young. They're only sophomores and they have nice height. I think they're going to be nice ones down the road."
Defensively, Dave Reese had a big game with a sack and a fumble recovery. Tim Flora forced the fumble that Reese pounced on and he also had a sack. Barney Haney and Derek Eby both had fourth quarter interceptions.
"B.J. Edwards is a really strong runner," Bibler said. "I think our inside people did a nice job. Lukens and Fox and our linebackers James Dawson and Dave Reese were in charge of stopping the fullback and they did a nice job there."
Valley (4-4, 4-2 in the TRC) will close out the season on Friday at Whitko. [[In-content Ad]]
