AKRON - With the Tippecanoe Valley High School renovation project 95 percent complete, the Valley School Board approved the last "large" change orders Monday.

David A. Mankowski, senior project manager with The Skillman Corp., said 76 valves along the corridors already have been changed. Labor took two hours per valve, plus materials and insulation, for a total cost of $9,691.85. The school board previously approved that change order and Mankowski was just providing the final cost for it.

The other change order was approved by the board at Monday's meeting. Eleven classrooms were renovated totally, but unexpectedly, some additional plaster patching had to be done because there was no plaster behind some tall wardrobe units in the classrooms. The work totaled $28,727.

The board also approved the purchase of a 2 foot by 8 foot sliding glass window from Quality Glass for $400 for the projection room.

Mankowski also let the board know the certificates of substantial completion were sent out Jan. 31. The certificates let the contractors know that 95 percent of the project is finished. It also marks the beginning of the project's warranty period, which ends Jan. 31, 2007.

In other business, the school board:

• Was presented with the 2006-07 Valley school calendar for review. The board will be asked to approve it at the March meeting. The first school day will be Aug. 18; fall break, Sept. 20; Thanksgiving vacation, Nov. 23-24; and spring vacation, end of school day March 30 through April 9.

The proposed calendar also had winter break beginning Dec. 19 through Jan. 9, and the last student day as May 31 with TVHS graduation June 3. However, board member Hal Hoffman said he thought it was better for winter break to begin Dec. 20 and then the last student day could be May 30. Other board members agreed and Superintendent Dr. Daniel Kramer said he'd discuss it with the teachers and get back to the board at the next meeting.

• Recognized sixth-grader Jonathan Tinkey, son of Byron and Christine Tinkey. For the past three years, Tippecanoe Valley Middle School sixth-graders wrote, illustrated and put together their own books. This year, Tinkey's book is the first for Valley Schools to be a finalist for the National Learning National Book Challenge.

• Accepted the retirement of Sue Pyle and Carol Surface, both from Mentone Elementary School.

• Held the first reading of a new board policy regarding public concerns and complaints. Kramer said the policy provides a framework and structure for complaints people may have.

• Approved removing the school board policy regarding the student assistance program. Kramer said the school corporation still provides similar programs but not as they are stated in the policy.

Members of the Valley School Board are Dave O'Brien, Hal Hoffman, Mark Wise, Rod Eaton and Bryan Murphy. Their next meetings are March 13 at Mentone Elementary School; April 17 at Akron Elementary School; and May 8 at TVHS, all at 7:30 p.m. [[In-content Ad]]
