Valley OKs Grading Policy for Extracurriculars

July 28, 2016 at 4:25 p.m.

AKRON – After several months of discussion, the Tippecanoe Valley School Board Monday night approved the high school athletic handbooks for 2013-14 with a new grading policy.
Tippecanoe Valley High School Assistant Principal Jon Hutton presented  the “Extracurricular Progressive F Policy”  to the board, though expressing some concern with it.
Under the policy, staff will check grades every 4-1/2 weeks to determine eligibility for extracurricular involvement. If any student is found to have more than one F in a class, barring the final exam grade, the student will be ineligible until the next grade check occurs 4-1/2 weeks later. The student will still be able to participate in practices, but not compete in any athletic or extracurricular contests.
If a student is found to have one F, they will be placed on probation until the following grade check. If at that time they are found to have another F, either in the same class or another, they will be ineligible to participate in extracurriculars until they show at the next grade check that they have all passing grades.
There are three grades in each class that will be considered for these grade checks: the first and second quarter grade of the semester and the semester final grade.
Any extracurricular activity which is a requirement for a class is exempt from this policy. A special needs student shall be covered by their Individual Education Plan as it relates to the policy.
Students’ grades will carry over from one semester to the next, even if that semester is the last of the school year. This means that to be eligible to play in fall extracurricular programs, students must have been eligible due to the grades from the preceding grading period.
Superintendent Brett Boggs suggested having Hutton report back to the board in January after two grading periods to see what effect the new policy is having. Hutton said February’s board meeting may be a safer time. He then asked when the new policy becomes active.
Mark Wise, board member, said everyone starts the 2013-14 school year with a clean slate and will go forward from there. He said the Progressive F policy is a tougher standard than what other school corporations have, except Triton, and tougher than the Indiana High School Athletic Association standard.
Hutton said they will have three opportunities to inform parents and students of the new grading policy for extracurricular activities. Those include the one-to-one meetings, the first day of school and when each sports team has its team meeting with family.
Rod Eaton, board member, said he didn’t want any parent to come to them and say they didn’t know about the policy.
A parent suggested Valley’s handbooks be put on its website.[[In-content Ad]]
