BURKET – With the retirement of Assistant Superintendent Dr. Daniel Kramer effective July 1, the Tippecanoe Valley School Board Monday night approved the promotions of two administrators.
Tippecanoe Valley Middle School Principal Blaine Conley will serve as Valley’s new assistant superintendent, with Assistant Principal Scott Backus taking over the role of principal at the middle school.
According to information provided by Superintendent Brett Boggs, Conley’s salary will be $96,072, on a 240-day contract from July 1 to June 30, 2015. Backus’ salary will be $75,700, on a 220-day contract, beginning July 1.
Conley started with the Tippecanoe Valley School Corp. in August 2001 as a fifth-grade teacher at Akron Elementary School. He taught fifth grade for four years before being named Akron’s principal for the 2005-06 school year. Conley served as principal for seven years before moving to TVMS to serve as principal. He is completing his second year at the middle school.
A 1993 Warsaw Community High School graduate, Conley graduated from Manchester College in 1997 with a bachelor’s degree in elementary education. In 2005 he completed the requirements for a master’s degree in education from IPFW, majoring in educational leadership. He earned an educational specialist degree from Indiana State University in 2010, and currently holds an Indiana superintendent’s license.
Conley is married to Jennie Cumberland, and they reside near Yellow Creek Lake with their two daughters.
Backus is a 1994 Tippecanoe Valley High School graduate. Earning his bachelor’s degree with a major in psychology and a minor in history from Wabash College in 1998, he has a secondary teaching license with endorsements in psychology, U.S. history and world civilizations. He earned a master’s degree from Olivet Nazarene University in 2001.
In August 1998, Backus was hired to teach social studies at TVMS. While a teacher at the middle school, Backus was involved in several extracurricular activities, including head coach of the TVMS football and TVHS baseball teams. He served as sponsor of the TVMS Junior Honor Society, co-sponsor of the TVMS Student Council, eighth-grade co-team leader and middle school representative on the TVSC Improvement Steering Committee.
In March 2012, Backus was named the new TVMS assistant principal, where he is completing his second year.
This summer, Backus will complete an 18-month online program through Ball State University, resulting in full administrative certification, Boggs told the school board.
Backus and his wife, Kim, reside in Akron with their two children.[[In-content Ad]]
