Teachers retiring are Akron Elementary School third-grade teacher Miriam Ruppel, Tippecanoe Valley Middle School physical education and health teacher Phil See and TVMS physical education and health teacher Rudy Glingle. Their final day with the school corporation will be June 3. Together, they have 115 years in education.
Ruppel will retire after 42 years of teaching, all at TVSC, according to Superintendent Brett Boggs. She began teaching sixth grade in fall 1971 in a portable classroom. She later moved to third grade.
Boggs said, “Mrs. Ruppel feels the most rewarding part of her career is seeing her former students in their careers or receiving correspondence telling her about their lives.”
What she will miss most will be seeing her students get excited about discovering that they can complete a skill independently.
She looks forward to spending more time with her family and enjoying her granddaughter. She plans to continue to help at the Indiana State Fair Pioneer Village where she educates others about Indiana’s agricultural history. She plans to travel with her husband, Bill, and their family.
See finishes with a 34-year career in education. After his first year of teaching at North Miami, he moved to TVSC for the remaining 33 years of his career.
During his career, See taught physical education, health, history and driver education.
The most rewarding aspects of his career have been the students, coaching football and teaching driver education. Boggs said See indicated that what he will miss most upon retiring is the people he works with closely on a daily basis.
Glingle is finishing 39 years in education. As a Grace College senior, he began student teaching at Tippecanoe Valley High School for Charlie Smith during the 1976 school year. In fall 1977, he began teaching science and health while coaching football and baseball, and serving as the freshman class sponsor at TVHS.
He has taught science, health and physical education.
“Seeing students do things they didn’t think they could do has been one of the rewarding aspects of Mr. Glingle’s career,” Boggs said. “Another was seeing the Akron and Mentone communities come together and support the high school football program. Mentone and Akron were still somewhat divided and the success of the TVHS football team pulled the community together for a cause and created a good start for the new high school. It was the beginning of Valley Pride.”
Another rewarding aspect for Glingle was seeing kids go from Valley to some very good careers and positions in their adult life while also being outstanding people in their community.
What Glingle will miss most is the kids, he said.
At the end of May, John Hart will retire as the school resource officer for TVSC. He officially will retire as a Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Department employee on June 30. He has been with KCSD for 28-1/2 years.
He started in law enforcement as a reserve officer in 1977. He then became the Mentone town marshal in 1979, where he served for five years.
During his years with KCSD, Hart served two stints as the school resource officer for TVSC. The first stint was in the early 2000s. He then switched places with Officer Josh Spangle and moved back to the detective division. Four years ago, Hart returned to TVSC.
He and his wife, Becky, are Mentone residents. He is a 1974 Mentone High School graduate.
Valley staff receiving awards were Akron Elementary School instructional assistant Debbie Hileman; TVHS mathematics and physics teacher Rod Hamman; and TVHS substitute teacher and coach Mark Wilcox. Boggs presented each one with a framed certificate and they will be recognized in an upcoming issue of the “From the Heart of the Valley” newsletter.
Hileman received the TVSC Pillar Award for Outstanding Support Staff.
She has served as an instructional assistant at Akron for nearly two decades. Prior to that, she was an evening custodian for three years.
Hamman received the TVSC World Class Teacher Award.
He has taught at TVHS for 31 years, teaching sophomores through seniors. He currently teaches Physics 1, Algebra 2, Advanced Algebra 2 and geometry.
He was the TVHS tennis coach for about 20 years.
Also the recipient of the TVSC Pillar Award was Mark Wilcox, a substitute teacher and coach at the high school.
After retiring from dairy farming 15 years ago, Wilcox became a substitute teacher for TVHS. Although he substitutes for classes in all subjects, math is his specialty, according to information provided. He also serves as an assistant track coach.[[In-content Ad]]
