MENTONE – Tippecanoe Valley School Board Monday night approved Randy Dahms as the Mentone Elementary School principal; the architect and construction manager for the Akron Elementary School Project; and two Valley teachers were named Air Force Association Teachers of the Year.
“We are in the process of the project at Akron Elementary School. The next step is for the board to approve the architectural firm and construction manager,” Superintendent Brett Boggs said.
He then recommended the Fort Wayne architectural and engineering firm of Barton-Coe-Vilamaa as the architect for the project, subject to the school corporation attorney’s review of their contract. The board unanimously approved the recommendation, and authorized Board President Bryan Murphy and Board Secretary Tom Craft to sign the contract.
Barton-Coe-Vilamaa was one of four architectural firms interviewed by Valley and that submitted fee proposals. The other firms were LWC Inc., Fanning & Howey and Schmidt Associates.
Barton-Coe-Vilamaa’s fixed fee for architectural and engineering services was $597,000.
Boggs then stated over the past several years Valley has had a relationship with Skillman Corp. on several projects for construction management. He asked the board to approve Skillman Corp. as the construction manager for the Akron project, subject to attorney approval of the contract. The board unanimously approved it, and authorized Murphy and Craft to sign the contract.
The Akron Elementary School building project includes the additions, renovations and improvements as suggested in the second concept drawing previously presented by Skillman Corp. It is estimated to cost $17.6 million.
With school starting in less than a month, Dahms will replace Angela Miller as the Mentone principal. Miller’s resignation was effective June 30. Miller worked for Valley for the past 17 years, and she has accepted a position as curriculum coordinator with the Caston School Corp.
Dahm’s annual salary will be $79,000 and he was given a two-year contract.
For the last eight years, Dahms served as principal at Leesburg Elementary School. He is a 1999 graduate of Grace College and served seven years as an elementary school teacher at Benton Elementary School in Goshen and Jefferson Elementary School in Winona Lake. In 2006, he was named principal at Westview Elementary School.
Dahms also is an adjunct professor for Grace College where he teaches the course “Methods of Teaching Science and Social Studies” to education majors, according to a news release from Valley.
In 2005, Dahms earned a master’s degree in school administration from IPFW.
