SOUTH BEND -ÊThings did not look good for the Tippecanoe Valley baseball team after the fifth inning of play against South Bend St. Joe at Coveleski Stadium in South Bend Thursday night.
The Indians scored three runs in the fifth frame to take a 5-1 lead over the Vikings with just two innings left to play.
Maybe someone for got to inform Valley the outlook was bleak.
The Viking offense exploded for seven runs in the top of the sixth inning to blow the game open and earn a 9-5 win at The Cove.
With one out and a four run deficit to overcome, Valley short stop Lance Bailey stepped to the plate and hit a single to reach first base. Bailey moved to second on a single by pitcher Kenny Koser, and a walk by thirdbaseman David Beyers loaded the bases. Britton Burkhart earned an RBI when he walked to first and sent Bailey across the plate.
With two outs and the bases loaded, catcher Brandon Cody hit a single to send Koser home and keep the bases loaded.
Then Kevin Paxton stepped to the plate and pounded a triple to the left-field fence to drive in three more runs, but the Vikings were not finished. Jon Rice moved into the batter's box and blasted a double to right field to score yet another run.
"We just hit the ball," said Valley coach Scott Backus. "Kevin Paxton's triple with the baes loaded was huge. We made a few mistakes early in the game, but we were able to shake it off and get it done offensively."
In all, Valley scored seven runs on five hits in the sixth inning, giving the Vikings an 8-5 advantage.
The Indians got two runners on base in the bottom of the sixth inning, but the Vikings squashed all hopes of a comeback by turning a 6-4-3 double play to send the St. Joe squad back into the field.
Valley scored an insurance run in the top of the seventh. After Koser reached first on an error, he moved to third when both Beyers and Burkhart walked to load the bases. A sacrifice fly by Kyle Howard sent Koser across the plate to put Valley up 9-5.
That's where the score remained as Viking freshman Brandon Newcomer pitched a 1-2-3 bottom of the seventh to secure the Valley win.
"It was nice to make the long drive up here and get the win on this field," said Backus. "Tonight was fun for everybody. All 14 or 15 of our players who dressed got to play, and everyone played well. It was a good night."
Koser picked up the win on the mound, pitching five innings and allowing five runs (two earned), six hits and one walk. He struck out four. Jayson McCalla pitched one inning with no runs, and Newcomer finished the game with a strikeout.
"Kenny Koser got his first win of the season," said Backus. "And I was happy with our freshman pitcher (Newcomer) who got three up and three down in the seventh. Jayson McCalla did a good job in relief as well."
Bailey led the Viking bats, going 2 for 4 at the plate with two runs. Derek Adamson, Koser, Beyers, Cody, Paxton and Rice added one hit each.
The win moved Valley's record to 4-3 on the season. The Vikings travel to Oak Hill Wednesday to kick off the Three Rivers Conference season.
