July 28, 2016 at 4:25 p.m.
AKRON - Tippecanoe Valley played host to the Southwood Knights Friday night in a Three Rivers Conference girls basketball game. The Vikings outlasted the Knights 62-53.
Valley started the first quarter with a run. Valley outscored the Knights 11-1 in the first four minutes of the quarter. The Knights scored their first field goal of the game at 3:58.
Valley was outscored 9-5 for the rest of the quarter to bring Southwood within six at 16-10.
"Chelsey Rhoades did a great job for us in the first. She had to play some tough defense tonight. It kind of takes the legs out of a person. It's not good when your best shooter starts to get tired," Valley coach Gary Teel said.
Valley started the second quarter with a 5-0 run to go up 21-10. Southwood then scored six straight points to take its first and only lead of the game at 24-23. The Vikings then outscored the Knights 10-3 the rest of the quarter to take a 34-27 halftime lead.
"We had some defensive relapses a few times tonight. We would go on a great run and then turn around and let them back into the game. We tried to get all of our players some quality playing time tonight," Teel said.
The third quarter proved to be a great team boost. Valley outscored the Knights 18-10 to increase the lead at the end of the third quarter to 52-38. The Vikings made three straight three point baskets after a Southwood score early in the quarter. Good defense and good shooting helped to increase the lead.
"Coach Cole has done a nice job with his team. Our goal tonight was control Hannah Lengel and we did a good job of it. She scored 28 points against Maconaquah the other night. Kandi Brandt stepped up for them in the first half and made up some of the scoring slack for them," Teel said.
Valley scored the first bucket of the fourth. Southwood then closed the score to 57-44 with more than six minutes left in the quarter. Valley went to the line four straight times only making two to take the lead back to 15.
Southwood then went on a 6-2 run to bring the score to 61-49.
"We just kept having relapses tonight. Even though you practice together, you may not have all of the same combinations on the floor at the same time. I think that may have been part of the problem. We played together as a team tonight," Teel said.
Valley scored on a foul shot by Jennifer Hathaway for its last basket of the game. Southwood then scored the last four points of the game to end it at 62-53.
"This was a great team win for us tonight. We have to keep having games like this to get momentum for the sectionals. We have four games left to do that," Teel said.
Rhoades led all scorers with 19 points including four three-point goals. Others contributing to the cause were Hannah Krueger with 13, Rachael Sitts with 11 and Lela Rohrer with nine. Sitts also led the Vikings with seven rebounds.
"This was a great team-building win for us. I am very proud of the way the team is improving," Teel said.
Valley imroved its record to 7-9 overall and 4-2 in Three Rivers Conference play. The Vikings are next in action Tuesday when they host Wawasee. The JV game tips off at 6:15 p.m.
