Valley Girls Win First Sectional In School History

PLYMOUTH -ÊIt wasn't quite David v. Goliath, but it was close.

The Tippecanoe Valley Lady Vikings traveled to Plymouth for the sectional final Saturday night against the host Pilgrims.

This was a Class 3A match-up, and while class basketball ensures there isn't too wide a discrepancy in enrollment, this was about as far apart as two 3A teams could be. Valley is just above the cut-off for 2A and Plymouth is near the cut-off for 4A.

Saturday night, though, was reserved for the little guy as the Valley girls won their first ever girls basketball sectional title in school history by defeating Plymouth 35-28.

It was a low scoring affair highlighted by pressure defense throughout. Both teams seemed to come out with the championship game jitters.

By the time the first quarter came to an end, Valley held Plymouth to just three points and led 11-3.

The second quarter saw the Vikings score only two points, but they held Plymouth to just six. It was a 13-9 Valley lead at halftime.

Viking coach Gary Teel talked about his team's effort in that first half.

"Our defense really stepped up and did a nice job from the start," he said. "I thought we really forced Plymouth into taking some bad shots. It's just one of those things, I knew it was going to be a defensive struggle. The score was only 13-9 at half but I wasn't really concerned. Even though we are used to more of an up-tempo kind of game, it was OK with us at that point."

The third quarter saw Plymouth work its way back. With just about a minute to go in the third the Pilgrims held the ball the last minute looking for a final shot.

While they missed the attempt, they made good on the put-back as the buzzer sounded, making it a one point Valley lead, 20-19, to start the fourth.

The first score in the fourth came at the 6:27 mark when Valley's Sherise Denny hit a big-time three to extend the lead to four and give the Vikings some breathing room at 23-19.

Plymouth's Morgan Uceny answered right back with a two as the Pilgrims failed to fold.

The Viking's Tabitha Pratt then made a basket at the 5:30 mark to take the lead back to four.

Pratt picked up her fourth foul with just over four minutes to go in the game and Holly Green checked in to replace her.

Green immediately added her name to the scorebook, hitting a two to extend Valley's lead to six points.

Plymouth then went to the line to shoot two free throws, after making the first Valley's fine sophomore Rebekah Parker took the miss on the second attempt and pushed it the length of the court right to the basket for a seven-point Valley lead with three minutes to play.

After a Plymouth basket, Parker made an excellent pass to Kathy Prater good for a basket and an assist.

Plymouth had one last chance with about a minute and a half left. Trailing by four the Pilgrims made good on a free throw attempt, and then immediately got a steal and a chance to draw to as close as one.

Unfortunately for the Pilgrims, they turned the ball over. When Parker made another outstanding assist to Abby Shafer to give Valley a 33-27 lead with just 40 seconds left, it was time to find the scissors as the Valley girls prepared to trim some nets to trim.

"I am overwhelmed. This feels so great." said Parker as she celebrated the schools first sectional championship. "I thought we came out and played really good defense. We just got things done. It worked out, we got the victory."

Fellow sophomore Abby Shafer shared similar feelings, "I think we did a good job, we really worked hard and played good defense against them. I think we were a little nervous at first but we came out and played our game. This is great."

As expected, Teel had some nice things to say.

"I am just so proud of the kids. They have worked so hard," he said. "They really deserve this. I am just so happy for the school and the community and the fans and our kids."

Tippecanoe Valley's win earned them a spot in the Twin Lakes regional and a match against Highland Saturday.

Three Area Wrestlers Advance From New Haven Semistate

By Jim Brenneman, Times-Union Sports Correspondent

FORT WAYNE -ÊThree area wrestlers will advance from the semistate to the State Finals next weekend. Wawasee will send two wrestlers, Josh Roa and Mike Hanlin, to the state competition at Conseco Fieldhouse along with Josh Staton of Manchester. All other area wrestlers were eliminated either in the opening round or in the quarterfinals of the semistate competition.

The pairings for the state competition are determined by how one finishes at the semistate. Fourth place finishers will face champions from one of the other three semistates, while runners up will take on third-place finishers.

Wawasee's Josh Roa (145 pounds) suffered his first loss, in a semi-final match to Jonathon Brownlee of Fort Wayne Snider, who took the championship. Roa had earlier in the day beaten Matt Read of Plymouth, 14-3 but then lost a 5-2 dogfight to Brownlee, still unbeaten at 43-0.

In the consolation match Roa soundly trounced Elwood's Jade Cornwell, accumulating four takedowns, a near fall and an escape for the 12-4 win. His first match at Conseco will be against John Turner (29-4), a senior from Princeton.

Also from Wawasee, Mike Hanlin (140) came away with fourth place, losing 3-2 in a close consolation match to Concordia's Joel Anderson.

Hanlin had been up 2-0 but Anderson came back with an escape and a third-period reversal to take the win. Earlier Hanlin had two wins by decision before losing 5-3 to Brandon Garner of NorthWood. Garner went on to take the championship in a 3-3 overtime decision against Bellmont's Tim Ortiz. Hanlin's opponent Friday at the state competition will be Matt Conklin of Evansville Mater Dei, a senior with a record of 39-2.

The other area state qualifier is Josh Staton (160) of Manchester, who had quietly amassed a season record of 38-1 coming to the semistate. After beating Brent Borders of Elwood 10-3, Staton lost to runner-up Chad Davis of NorthWood 7-5. In the consolation match Ryan Horton of Peru narrowly edged the Manchester stand out, 3-2, leaving Staton with fourth place. The fourth place finish means in his opening match at Conseco he will be pitted against Keith Garrard, a 48-1 junior from New Castle.

Wrestlers losing matches in the opening round or in the quarterfinals of the semistate were knocked out of the running for a shot at the state championship.

From Wawasee, Eric Vallejo (112) had a bye and then lost to Landon Genth of Adam's Central. Grant Gibson's impressive season ended at 32-3 when he was surprised and pinned by the eventual runner-up, Kellii Kahelekomo of Muncie Central, with just two seconds remaining in period one, at 1:58. Sophomore Trevor Brown (160) will be forced to "wait till next year," as he was beaten in the opening round, 10-3 by Brent Borders of Elwood.

The fastest pin during the entire day was recorded by Jake Long of Tippecanoe Valley when he crunched Lee Gibson of Fort Wayne North Side in just 15 seconds.

However, undefeated Randy Baker of Belmont put an end to Long's run with a pin in 1:41.

Whitko's John Daring (119) was pinned at :27 by Yorktown's Jared Smith in a first-round match.

Tanner Connealy of Warsaw was beaten in round one by Bellmont's Joel Koons, 5-1. Kyle Boley notched a win in the opening round when he nailed Cody Ship of New Haven in 1:05. Then Boley was eliminated when he found himself the victim of a technical fall, 18-2, at the hands of Delta's Brandon Gonzales. Jake Boots (215) had a 5-3 victory against Marion's Aaron Johnson before being put out by Fort Wayne Dwenger's Matt Brown in a 17-9 major decision.

Tyler Miller (180) also came up with an opening round victory, defeating Aaron Mendez of Bellmont 6-3 before being flattened by undefeated Joshua Buuck of Dwenger in forty-five seconds. Buuck put on an astounding performance against quality competition as he pinned all of his opponents Saturday, spending less than five minutes combined on the mat for his three matches. His other victims included the undefeated Aaron Kerkhof of Delta (1:05) in the semifinals and then Elkhart's Steve McCarty (3:03) in the championship.

The lone representative from Triton, Errik Lemler (130), was edged out 6-5 by Justin May of DeKalb.

Twelve representatives from the Northern Lakes conference will advance to Indianapolis. However, not a single wrestler from the Warsaw sectional will advance from the semistate.
