BOURBON – The Triton and Tippecanoe Valley track and field teams are gearing up for the sectional, which is just two weeks away.
In a three-team meet Tuesday in Bourbon, which also featured Rochester, the Valley girls picked up two wins with 68 points, followed by Rochester’s 49 and Triton’s 48.
On the boys side, Rochester got the double-win, generating 76 points, followed by Triton’s 50 and Valley’s 41.
In their victory, the Lady Vikings were once again led by youth.
Sophomore Caylie Teel finished first in the 100 (13.4), 200 (27.5), long jump (15-9) and anchored the winning 400 relay (54.5) with freshman Karis Tucker, sophomore Catherine Leadford and sophomore Jazzmine Brown.
Brown also anchored the winning 1600 relay (4:28.8) of freshman Breelyn Conley, freshman Brooklyn Conley and Leadford, while also winning the high jump (4-10).
“Our girls are completely surprising me,” Valley coach Alysha Wachtmann said. “I knew they were going to be competitive, but I didn’t realize how well they were going to do – because they’re young. Most of them are freshmen and sophomores. It’s a pleasant surprise that we keep getting better and we keep stepping up to the challenge.”
With low numbers, Triton coach Curt Kreft may be looking more toward individual victories at the Rochester Sectional on May 14, along with Valley, trying to advance to the Warsaw Regional a week later.
“We have a small team,” Kreft said. “We have about 15 boys and about the same number of girls, so when you go up against a 3A school and be competitive, it’s OK.”
Triton did finish just one point behind Rochester, thanks in large part to the performance of freshman Jaela Meister, who won the 100 hurdles (17.5), 300 hurdles (49.8) and was second in the pole vault (6-6).
“Meister’s a freshman and she’s really going to be a nice addition for the next three years,” Kreft said. “She’s athletic. She’s a girl that’s going to do some pole vault and be successful there. Hurdles, she’s getting her steps down and will do really well.”
As a senior, Breanna Lemler has also been doing well for the Lady Trojans, although she may not have been at 100 percent Tuesday.
On the day, Lemler took first in the 400 (1:02.4), defeating Brown by four-tenths of a second, and finished third in the 100 (13.8) and 200 (28.5).
“She was a little sick today, and sick yesterday too,” Kreft said. “We’re looking at the 200, 400 for her (at sectionals) and maybe to shot put, because she can throw 31 (feet).”
Triton and Valley both took a back seat to Rochester in the boys meet, although Valley did have a bright spot in junior Nolan Sponseller, who won the 200 (23.6) and 400 (52.4).
“We don’t have the numbers that we do with the girls, but we have Nolan Sponseller and Michael Thacker, who didn’t run tonight because we’re letting him rest an ankle injury,” Wachtmann said. “Then we have Derrick Cunningham, who’s doing great in the high jump and long jump.”
Cunningham won the long jump with a leap of 19-6 and was second in the high jump, clearing 5-10.
Triton’s Blake Johnson won the 300 hurdles (46.1) and pole vault (11-0), and freshman Jeremy Jones was also tough, winning the 100 (11.9) and finishing second in the 200 (23.7), just a tenth-of-a-second behind Sponseller.
Jones was also a part of Triton’s 400 relay, along with Phillip Stepp, Nate Spangle and Drew Mosson, which finished first in 51.1 seconds.
“He’s going to help us a lot,” Kreft said of Jones. “I can see him moving on in the 100, making regionals.”
Jones and the rest of the Trojans, as well as the Vikings, are in sectional action May 16 at Plymouth, vying for a shot to advance to the May 23 Kokomo Regional.
“We’re just trying to keep people healthy and get to the finish line,” Wachtmann said, sharing every track coach’s sentiment at his point in the season.
Triton hosts LaVille and Lakeland Christian Academy Thursday, while Valley’s next meet is Monday at Whitko, being joined by North Miami in a three-team Three Rivers Conference meet.
