BREMEN - In his first high school varsity game, Tippecanoe Valley girls basketball coach Chris Kindig found out it takes more than one girl to win.

Despite junior Staci Groom's 25 points, the Tippecanoe Valley Lady Vikings (0-1) dropped their season opener at Bremen (1-0) Thursday, 56-43.[[In-content Ad]]"We're going to have to get other girls to step up and help her out," Kindig said about Groom, who scored her 25 on 6-of-25 shooting. "She's going to get a lot more quality shots if we have other people that are able to do that."

The other girl that may be able to do that is senior Becky Minnick. The only problem is, Minnick is currently sitting next to the coaching staff on the bench with a broken wrist.

"She's going to be a double-digit scorer whenever she gets back," Kindig said about Minnick, who is expected back sometime in January. "She's also going to be another rebounder. She's a tough rebounder and she's a leader. We're missing those extra 10 or 12 points from someone, which would have helped tonight."

Without Groom's scoring output, the Lady Vikings would have been in major trouble, as she had 25 of the team's 37 points at one point.

As Valley was relying on Groom, the Bremen Lady Lions had more balance with senior Lauren Studt scoring 19, senior Brittney Pittman netting 14 and junior Jenna Pfeiffer pitching in 13. Studt also had 10 rebounds, five assists, four steals and a blocked shot.

"We have a long way to go," Bremen coach Marty Huber said. "We haven't had time to work on situations. We haven't had time to do anything. I'm getting to practice late, but the girls did a good job of fighting and hanging in there."

Huber has had trouble getting to practice because he's also an assistant coach on the football team, which plays a regional game tonight. Along with Huber on the bench, the football team's head coach Bob Holmes is also an assistant on the basketball team.

Even with limited practice time, Huber believes his team can still play defense, especially when there's only one girl to worry about.

"We have to be smarter on defense," Huber said. "When you have a player hitting three-pointer after three-pointer, you have to know where she is at all times."

The breaking point in the game came between the 5:31 mark in the second quarter and the 6:11 mark of the third when Bremen outscored Valley 20-2, turning a 17-16 deficit into a 36-19 lead.

"It was just a little lack of experience," Kindig said about the stretch. "Maybe a little bit of nervousness for the first game. Hopefully, we'll get over that."

Kindig may also hope his team gets over fouling the opposition, as Valley had 26 fouls to Bremen's 13. The foul differential helped Bremen convert 23 of 37 free throws, while Valley went 9 of 15 from the line.

"You're not going to win a ballgame with that kind of differential," Kindig said. "That's one of the formulas you have on the board. You need to make more free throws than the other team attempts. We definitely missed it there."

Another ratio Kindig may not be pleased with was his team's 14-of-61 shooting, good for 23.6 percent to Bremen's 14-of-34 shooting (41.2 percent).

Valley is back in action Tuesday at Class 1A No. 4 Oregon-Davis.

"It doesn't get any easier," Kindig said.
