Valley Girls Hoops Coach Stepping Down

AKRON - After a 12-year run that produced five sectional championships and a trio of Three Rivers Conference championships, Tippecanoe Valley High School varsity girls basketball coach Gary Teel is stepping down.

Teel, the only coach in TVHS girls basketball history to guide the Lady Vikings to a sectional title, gave his resignation letter to Athletic Director Duane Burkhart on April 16.[[In-content Ad]]The Tippecanoe Valley School Corporation Board of Trustees will accept Teel's resignation, as well as that of junior varsity girls coach Roger Moriarty, at tonight's meeting.

The meeting is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. in the public meeting room at Mentone Elemenatry School.

"I have been blessed with the opportunity to do my dream job for 12 years and work with a fine group of outstanding young ladies over that time," Teel said in a prepared statement. "This was not an easy decision. It is difficult to walk away from a successful program built by our coaching staff over the last 12 years, as well as the girls I enjoy coaching. I hope that I have been able to teach the girls lifelong skills beyond basketball - teamwork, determination, perseverance, integrity, caring and excellence. If I have been able to do that over the past 12 years, it is more priceless than wins and losses."

Under Teel, the Lady Vikings won sectional championships in 2002, 2003, 2004, 2006 and 2007.

Valley won TRC championships in 2002, 2007 and 2009.

In his 12 seaons at Valley, Teel guided the Lady Vikings to a record of 158-110, including a mark of 61-23 in the TRC.

Over the last four seasons, the Lady Vikings posted a sparkling record of 24-4 against conference opponents.

"This is not something we wanted, from an administration standpoint," said Burkhart. "Gary has the highest level of integrity and did a great job working with the kids. He was very successful with the team here."

Burkhart said the position has been posted, and that Valley is currently accepting applications and resumes.

In a phone interview this morning, Teel said that he is stepping down as Valley's coach, but that it doesn't mean he's retiring from coaching.

"As one door closes, sometimes another one opens," said Teel. "Maybe another opportunity will present itself down the road. I'm going to take some time right now, but if something came up down the road, I'd be more than willing to look at it."

Under Teel, the Lady Vikings posted a program-best record of 22-3 during the 2002-2003 season.

Valley opened the next season by beating Class 4A No. 1 Warsaw and went on to finish the season with a 21-3 record.

In 2004, Teel received the Bob King Award from the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association and was the District 1 Coach of the Year.
