AKRON - Somehow Tippecanoe Valley found a way.

Despite an 18-point, 12-rebound performance by Wawasee freshman Taylor Goshert and despite being outrebounded by the Warriors 39-19, the Vikings pulled out a 51-49 win in girls basketball action Tuesday night.

Wawasee took ninth-ranked (3A) Plymouth to double overtime before falling 32-29 Saturday night.

But Wawasee head coach Kem Zolman doesn't attribute Tuesday night's loss to being a hangover game after the loss to Plymouth.

"We really weren't worried that this would be a trap game," said Zolman. "We were confident they would be OK."

What proved to be Wawasee's downfall was 23 turnovers.

Lela Rohrer had a hand in the loss as well.

The 5-foot-9 senior led the Vikings in scoring with 16 points on 5-of-12 shooting that included the game-winner.

With 11 seconds left in regulation, Rohrer drove along the baseline and threw up a circus shot that bounced around the rim before falling to give Valley its 51-49 lead.

After a timeout, Wawasee put the ball in the hands of freshman Brennan McAdams. McAdams drove three-quarters the length of the court but couldn't get a quality shot off against Viking freshman Whitney Sparkman and her attempt bounced wide left off the rim.

McAdams was charged with the Warriors' fate after fellow freshman Goshert fouled out with 1:08 left in the fourth quarter.

Goshert showed why she may be getting a lot of attention from big-time colleges over the next three years as she scored 18 points while pulling down 12 rebounds and grabbing six steals.

Despite Goshert's near triple-double, the Warriors couldn't overcome turnovers and poor shooting.

Wawasee finished the night 17 of 49 (34 percent) from the field and just 11 of 17 (64 percent) from the free-throw line.

Free throws did keep the Warriors in the fray as they shot 9 of 11 from the charity stripe in the final quarter.

In fact, both teams combined for just five field goals in the final eight minutes while scoring 19 of their combined 30 points from the free-throw line.

One of those five field goals came in the form of Wawasee's Megan Walker's three pointer with 40 seconds left to play. It was her first field goal of the game after going 0 of 5 and it brought the Warriors even with Valley at 49-49.

While Wawasee came back with long-range shooting, Valley stayed ahead in part on the solid play of Sparkman.

The 6-0 center scored all five of her points in the final quarter along with pulling down two rebounds.

"Whitney is so tough as a freshman," said Valley head coach Gary Teel. "She came in and gave us a big lift. A lot of kids did that for us tonight."

Kayla Newman came off the Viking bench to score four points while reigning in three steals. Jessica Rice rounded out the Valley bench scoring with a basket.

Nine of the Vikings' 11 bench points came in the fourth quarter.

The Vikings used a 7-0 run in the final 1:08 of the third quarter to erase a three-point deficit and grab momentum for the fourth quarter.

Wawasee committed two straight turnovers that turned into three pointers by Rohrer and junior Chelsy Rhoades.

Rhoades hit three three-pointers on the evening and finished with 11 points.

Besides Goshert, the only other Warrior to finish in double-digit scoring for Wawasee was Tiffany Fick who finished with 10 points and nine rebounds.

With the win, the Vikings up their record to 8-9 on the season. Valley returns to Three Rivers Conference action Saturday when it travels to Manchester for a 6:15 p.m. JV tipoff.

Wawasee drops to 9-8 on the season. The Warriors are next in action Saturday at Concord for a 2:30 p.m. tipoff.
