AKRON - Valley's Holli Jackson was a late scratch Wednesday night against No. 7 (1A) Triton with a bad back. Luckily for Viking head coach Gary Teel, the likes of Danielle Howard and Lela Rohrer, who started for Jackson, stepped up to break the back of the Trojans 57-33.

Triton took its first and only lead in the opening seconds of Wednesday night's contest when Lindsay Stuzman hit a three-pointer at the top of the key to put the Trojans up 3-0.

Valley's Kara Kramer, who signed her letter of intent for Eastern Illinois before the contest, quickly answered with a three of her own.

The answer on how to stop Kramer was tough for Triton to find. The 5-foot-9 guard went 7 of 15 from the field for 19 points to go along with six steals and four rebounds to lead the Vikings.

It was the contribution of Valley's role players, however, that carried Valley to the win.

Rohrer stepped up in place of Jackson and came up big with four points, four steals and 10 rebounds.

Danielle Howard also came off the bench for eight points to give the Vikings a spark.

Teel was impressed with how everyone, especially Rohrer stepped up on short notice.

"I think Lela Rohrer played a great game defensively. She just hustled and made a lot of steals. She did a great job on help defense and hit some key shots for us. But I think we played as a team, great team defense. We got out on the shooters most of the time," said Teel.

Triton was held to 3-of-5 shooting from the arc on Wednesday. The Trojans seemed flustered at times by Valley's full court press and swarming halfcourt defense. Triton committed 26 turnovers against the Vikings, which led to easy transition baskets.

"We had trouble attacking the defense sometimes," said Triton first-year head coach Paul Walker. "The ball movement wasn't what it needed to be. But I thought when we did get shots we were succesful and at times we'd get three or four shot attempts at a time."

Triton's Kelly Rettinger led the Trojans with seven rebounds that included five on the offensive boards.

But the second chances for Triton became few and far between as the game progressed.

The Trojans were down 23-13 at halftime but were unable to connect from the field. Conversely, Valley become hot from the field to start the second half, hitting seven of eight shots to in the opening minutes of the third quarter. The Vikings went on a 15-2 run before Triton called a timeout with 3:36 remaining in the third quarter.

At that point, the Trojans were down 40-17 and facing an uphill climb.

"We talked about how the first two or three minutes of the third quarter were going to be critical. We needed to make an indention, cut the lead down to six or seven, but not through anyone's lack of effort it actually ended up going the other way," said Walker.

Chelsy Rhoades hit a three-pointer that ignited the crowd. Rhoades finished with nine points, while Rachel Sitts finished with seven.

"We've got to regroup. Kelly (Rettinger) did a a good job of rebounding. We also relaxed a little bit. Maybe we were a little juiced up for the rivalry," said Walker of his team's effort.

Triton must quickly shake this game off as the Trojans have two big games still looming this week. Walker and Co. open up Northern States Conference play against Bremen Friday before traveling to the Summit City less than 24 hours later to take on No.1 (1A) Fort Wayne Canterbury and sophomore sensation Megan King in a battle of ranked 1A teams.

"In the grand scheme of things the game means nothing. It's not a sectional opponent, it's not a conference opponent. We just got to learn from it and get ready for the weekend," said Walker.

Stutzman led the Trojans in scoring with 14 points while Kristen Dean added eight for Walker.

The Trojans, 6-2 overall, face Bremen Friday at 8 p.m., while Valley, 5-3 overall, hosts North Miami in both teams' Three Rivers Conference opener.
