BOURBON - When Tippecanoe Valley girls basketball coach Gary Teel's granddaughter waved to him during the fourth quarter of Thursday's game, he had more than enough reason to volley the greeting right back with a smile and a wave.

Teel's calmness stemmed from the fact that his team built as much as a 35-point lead in their 72-44 win over host Triton, improving to 5-7 on the year.[[In-content Ad]]"The kids really played an excellent team game, as far as distributing the basketball and getting the ball to open people," Teel said. "That's what I really enjoyed with this group tonight."

That team game resulted in a 55-percent shooting night, inclucing a 6-of-9 effort from behind the three-point arc. Leading the way for the Vikings was senior Hannah Krueger, scoring 27 points on 10-of-14 shooting, including 5 of 6 from beyond the arc.

"She had a great floor game," Teel said of Krueger.

Along with scoring the game-high 27 points, Krueger also had team highs in steals (3) and assists (2), while also recording five rebounds running the Valley point.

"She can make some steals, distribute the basketball and find open people," Teel said of the reigning Times-Union Player of the Year.

"If you get the ball distributed to your open people, eventually, it's gonna come back to ya," he added. "Hannah did that tonight, and shot the ball well."

Teamed with Krueger, junior Stacie Hoffman put Valley over the top. Coming off Christmas break, Hoffman shot 7 of 11 from the field for 19 points, recorded five rebounds, two steals and an assist. She also gave Triton fits in the halfcourt, playing at the top of Valley's 1-2-2 zone.

"She did a great job up front on our defense," Teel said of Hoffman. "She made some deflections, allowing us to get some steals."

Valley finished the night with 11 steals, led by Krueger and Kate Myers, who both had three.

Triton entered the game fresh off a Caston Tournament victory over the weekend, but against Valley, the Vikings' height and speed was just too much.

"Triton had just won two games at a tournament, so I knew they'd come in with a lot of confidence," Teel said. "They were playing at home, and we hadn't played in two weeks. So yes, I was concerned with our intensity, because you just never know."

In the beginning, Triton did hang around, trailing 14-10 at the end of the first. Following a 6-0 run to open the second, Valley began to pull away until an 8-2 run to close the half had them up 35-19.

Triton was led in scoring by junior Paige Davis' 13 points. She also grabbed three rebounds, the same amount as senior Jessica Ganshorn.

The loss dropped Triton to 6-7, but even though the Trojans lost to a team with a losing record, it may not be your typical 5-7 team. Of their five wins, one is a 24-point win over Class 2A seventh-ranked Winamac on Dec. 12. The girls from Akron have also picked up losses to formidable foes, including Class A, top-ranked Oregon-Davis and Class 3A's seventh-ranked Plymouth Pilgrims. After a rough start to the season, Teel's hoping those losses become less and less as 2008 progresses.

"We've played a lot of excellent basketball teams," the Valley coach said. "Hopefully that prepares us. Our win-loss record, we're improving, and our kids are starting to gel. We're going to take the second half of the season to work on the postseason. We're just going to try to improve and do some things better. If the kids continue to play unselfishly, like they did tonight, that's gonna make us much better down the road."

The Vikings will get their chance to improve when 1-10 Northfield visits Valley Saturday at noon, while Triton travels to Glenn tonight for a 6:30 p.m. junior varsity tipoff.
