Valley Equals Last Season's Win Total
July 28, 2016 at 4:25 p.m.
MENTONE - To describe Saturday's Valley-Argos boys basketball game in one word, "aggressive" would be an accurate description.
Aggressive enough for the two teams to combine for 44 fouls, shoot 41 free throws and have three players foul out.
In the end, Valley used the Dragons' aggression against them to the tune of 17 of 23 from the charity stripe in their 61-59 victory. The win is Valley's sixth of the season, the same number of wins they tallied last season. Argos dropped to 4-2.
Valley's Jarvis Shepherd led all scorers with 19 points. Brandon Eaton was the only other Viking in double figures with 11. Caleb Andrews paced Argos with 14 points, while Chris Kessler added 12.
Shepherd was the story in the early going. During the third quarter of the junior varsity game while the Dragons made their way to the dressing rooms, one Argos player taunted Shepherd by calling his name as he passed.
Shepherd got the best of his counterparts as he scored 10 of Valley's 14 first-quarter points to take a two-point advantage into the second stanza.
"Jarvis played well in the first quarter," said Valley coach Bill Patrick. "He works in Argos and is friends with some of their players. I trust it was all in good nature."
The Vikings began to put the game away in the second quarter by opening the frame with a 10-2 run pushing their two-point lead to 10, 24-14.
"Early in the first half there were a couple of stretches where we played really well," said Patrick. "But in the third quarter we were not ready to play."
The Dragons cut a 10-point halftime deficit to two at 32-30 with a 6-0 run that started the second half.
The Vikings quickly pushed the lead back to six, only to see Argos draw close yet again.
"Rebounding," said Patrick. "That's how they got back in the ballgame in the second half. Our shot selection when we had the lead wasn't the greatest. One pass, one dribble ... we needed to show more patience."
Argos outscored the Vikings 17-14 in the third frame and 20-15 in the final frame, accounting for the 61-59 final.
"It was pretty physical," said Patrick. "Neither team has been able to play or practice much and are out of shape."
The same could be said of the officials. It appeared as though the referees were in their first games in two weeks as well.
The small Valley crowd reacted to numerous questionable calls, including one where the ball rolled to one end of the floor. Patrick chased it down and rather than tossing it back to the official, walked over and handed it to him with the crowd applauding his antics.
"I didn't agree with the call he had made," said Patrick. "It was nothing in particular they did, just called a couple of offensive fouls on (Josh) Cumberland and Eric (Prater) that were really questionable."
The aforementioned foul on Prater was his fifth. Cameron Hulse and Scott Bailey fouled out as well.
Valley (6-3) will travel to Northfield on Friday. Argos will play at Caston.
"We're 2-0 in the conference and play Northfield on Friday," said Patrick. "We want to be in position to win the conference. I think Northfield beat Caston (Valley's Saturday opponent) earlier in the year, and they are getting better every game. At this point we'd like to be 3-0 in the conference. We still have Rochester, Manchester and Southwood. It's a competitive conference."

Whitko Gets Back On Winning Track

SOUTH WHITLEY - Conditioning over Christmas break helped the Whitko Wildcats boys basketball team defeat the Wabash Apaches 80-67 despite missing more than a week of practice due to last week's winter weather.
"We worked hard over Christmas to get in shape," said Whitko coach Fred Fields. "We ran like crazy every day of practice and got in good shape.
"If we hadn't had that, we might not have won tonight."
The game seesawed back and forth for the first six minutes as Whitko and Wabash scored dueling baskets, but the Wildcats held the Apaches scoreless for the final 1:30 to go into the second frame with a 22-16 lead.
Ben Mohr broke out in the second to net 10 of his 26 points to help lead the Wildcats to a 47-36 advantage at the half.
Wabash scored the first points of the second half as LeRoy Vinson hit a three-pointer to make the score 47-39, but Whitko's Joe Grant answered with a two-point shot of his own to restore Whitko's double-digit lead, 49-39.
However, the Apaches continued to chip away at the Wildcat lead and with 2:07 left in the third frame, Garry Gahl nailed two shots from the charity stripe to bring Wabash within three points of the lead, 53-50.
But three points was as close as the Apaches would get as Whitko outscored them 9-2 in the final two minutes of the third quarter.
"We went from being up by 14 points to being up by three points, but we didn't let emotion get in the way," said Fields. "I like the fact that we didn't falter.
"I think that was a bigger key than many people realize."
Josh Gonzalez and Shane Henderson were the leaders in the fourth frame as they combined for 12 of 18 total Wildcat points.
"Henderson had his best game of the year," said Fields. "He did a nice job tonight."
In the end, Whitko came out on top of Wabash 80-67 behind 26 points from Mohr and 15 points from Gonzalez.
Joe Grant was just two points away from a double-double with eight points and 14 rebounds.
Bob Fairchild led the Apaches with 17 points, and Vinson chipped in 13.
"Wabash is improving every game," said Fields. "They shot well tonight."
The Wildcats, now 3-4, will take the court Friday as they host Fort Wayne Dwenger at 6:30 p.m.
