Valley Edges County Rival Warsaw

July 28, 2016 at 4:25 p.m.

Tippecanoe Valley sophomore Anne Secrest hit a jumper from just behind the free throw line with 5.8 seconds remaining to lift the Lady Vikings to a 38-36 win over Warsaw at the Tiger Den Friday night.
Warsaw, which led by a single point on only two occasions, had a pass tipped away before a shot at the buzzer missed wildly.
With the game tied, the Lady Vikings called time out with 1:37 remaining, then ran the clock down for a final shot. A blocking foul on the Lady Tigers’ Pam Miller under the Tippecanoe Valley basket with 11 seconds left was ruled a non-shooting foul, setting up Secrest’s heroics.
Both teams had to overcome foul issues. Secrest picked up her fouth foul in the final quarter, while teammate Caylie Teel picked up her fourth violation in the third quarter.
Lady Viking head coach Chris Kindig was pleased with his bench play.
“I’ve got seven starters, in my opinion, so I had all kinds of confidence in the girls that were in there could get the job done,” he said. “Each one of those girls brings something a little different to the table. Yes, there’s a gap without Anne or Caylie, but I think the two that came in did a really nice job.”
Meanwhile, the Lady Tigers has issues of their own, with five different players picking up three fouls each. Starting guard Kilee Slone also sat out the game with an injury sustained earlier this week in practice, meaning the Warsaw bench needed to come through. While some inexperience showed, Warsaw head coach Michelle Harter was pleased with the overall effort of her squad, much more so than after Tuesday’s loss to Fort Wayne Bishop Luers.
“Tonight it was a great game, and I told the girls they have nothing to hang their heads about,” she said. “From Tuesday night to tonight their effort was 100 percent better, we played with energy, we played with excitement and most importantly we played as a team. Everyone on the team contributed. Mariah Rivera had to step in and play some big minutes for us, Lauren (Shaffner) and Kenzie (Welk) had to get in there and play for us, and everyone who came in did their job tonight, and that’s exactly what we need to do.
“Now, did we do some things that were inexperience types of things, like leave a shooter at a key point in time? Yes, but those are some things you can live with because down the road we’re going to be better and those things aren’t going to happen.”
Getting to the dramatic end of the game had moments of excitement as well. Tippecanoe Valley would get out to a small lead, but never more than six points, then Warsaw would come back to tie it. Warsaw didn’t gain a lead until the 3:15 mark of the third quarter, but didn’t let the Lady Vikings play the up-tempo style they’d prefer.
“We talked at halftime about how offensively we were really out of character.” Kindig said. “We weren’t getting to our spots, we were rushing things. I thought defensively we played pretty well, but we’d like to score a few more points. So at halftime we talked about slowing ourselves down, being more patient on offense, and making that second or third cut or that extra pass, rotating the ball a few times.”
Tippecanoe Valley pressured the Lady Tigers all night, but not just to take advantage of Warsaw’s altered lineups.
“We prefer to play an up tempo game, and Warsaw did an excellent job of making it a half-court game, making us slow it down,” said Kindig. “That’s part of the reason why we pressed; it’s not always to get steals, sometimes it’s to get the other team to speed things up, to play where you’re a little more comfortable. When you have people in foul trouble, it kind of restricts you. I thought Warsaw did a nice job of controlling the tempo of the game, but we were able to make some plays down the stretch that we wanted to make.”
Meredith Brouyette led the Lady Vikings with nine points, with Secrist adding eight. Warsaw’s Madi Graham and Vicki Harris tied for game-high honors with 10 points each.
The Lady Vikings, now 2-0, won’t play again until they host Portage at 10:30 a.m. on Nov. 29 in the opening round of the Tippecanoe Valley Tournament. Meanwhile, Warsaw, now 1-2, returns to action right away, travelling to Noblesville for a 7:30 p.m. game today.
