Valley Drops Softball Opener

MENTONE - The Valley softball team fought back from a 4-0 deficit to tie the game, but Maconaquah scored a run in the sixth to pick up a 5-4 win despite getting just four hits Thursday.

Brooke Fisher led the Vikings with three hits and added an RBI. Aubrey Engstrand had a pair of hits and Brandi Manns and Mary Martin both drove in runs. Manns, Martin, Brandi Fisher and Alyssa VanCleave all had singles.

Valley (0-1) will be at Goshen on April 14.

Girls: Penn 77, Warsaw 46

At Mishawaka, Warsaw's Summer Boyd and Ashlee Bouse combined for five first places, but they still lost their first outdoor meet of the season Thursday to Penn.

Boyd won the 1,600-meter run (5:47.4) and 800 (2:35.4). She also was a member of 1,600 relay team, which won with a time of 4:28.4. Brittney Raber, Amy Robertson and Rachel Cullison were the other members of the 1,600 relay team.

Bouse won the 100 hurdles (16.4 seconds) and 300 hurdles (50.3 seconds).

Warsaw had two other first places, Bobbi Wildman in the 100 (13.7 seconds) and Faith Gonzalez in the discus (97-6 3/4).

Penn won the junior varsity meet 73-37.

At Nappanee, NorthWood won 14 of 16 events in defeating Manchester Thursday.

Aaron Hoover won both the 1600 and the 3200 for the Panthers and Matt Traub won the pole vault and the 110 hurdles. Jason Brennaman also picked up two first place finishes by winning the high jump and the 400.

Manchester's Greg Groombridge grabbed the Squires only two first place finishes by winning the discus and the shot put.

Manchester will be at Oak Hill with Rochester on April 14 while NorthWood will be at Plymouth with Wawasee on the same date.
