Along with approving the advertisement of its 2011 budget, the board also approved a 1-percent salary reduction for all 10 of Tippecanoe Valley's administrators.
Superintendent Brett Boggs noted that cut will result in a savings of $7,610. Combined with the elimination of the curriculum coordinator position and reducing Dr. Daniel Kramer's assistant superintendent position from full-time to part-time, it will result in a cut of nearly $108,000 in salaries.[[In-content Ad]]Boggs said the corporation received $734,000 less in state funding in 2010 than in 2009.
Based on information from the Indiana Department of Education, schools can expect such a similar reduction in 2011.
With that in mind, the board also approved freezing the salaries of classified staff, which includes custodial staff, secretaries/treasurers, school nurses, special needs personnel, instructional assistants, maintenance personnel, technology staff, cafeteria staff and transportation personnel.
During the budget workshop, Kramer also reiterated that during the planning for the 2011 budget, it came with planning on less money from the state.
Kramer went over the corporation's general fund, which he said was "the one that's affected the most"; the debt service fund, the school transportation fund, school bus replacement fund and the capital projects fund.
The board approved the advertising of the budget with the caveat that if the school receives any information it wasn't expecting at an information meeting with the state Friday that it will make the proper adjustments in the budget.
The board also approved the resignation of Rachel Higgins and approved the hiring of April Stiles for a home economics position.
Stiles contract wasn't renewed May 10. Boggs noted it was a reduction in staff to help with less state funding and a decline in student enrollment. But with Higgins' resignation, it opened a spot for Stiles.
Finally, the board approved a resolution authorizing the use of the design-build contracting method and the appointment of members to the technical review committee related to the school's wind power project.
Members of the committee are Boggs, Kramer, school board members Hal Hoffman and Mark Wise, community member Jim Mitterling, Bob Miller of Miller Construction and architect Daniel D. Rawlins of InterDesign.
The school board will hold another budget hearing Sept. 2 at 7:30 p.m. and will adopt the budget at its Sept. 13 monthly meeting.
