Valley Cruises In Carr's Return

AKRON - The last time Ryleigh Carr suited up for Tony Stesiak's Rochester Zebras girls basketball team, it resulted in a 45-23 win over Culver on November 30. Since that point, Carr has been sidelined with a case of mononucleosis that landed the 5-foot-7 junior in the hospital.
Carr, now fully recovered, made her return against backyard rival Valley Saturday night and saw three Vikings score in double digits as Valley won handily, 55-37.
The Vikings' Kara Kramer overcame foul trouble to lead Valley with 17 points.
Kramer scored nine points in a first quarter that saw the Vikings jump out to a 22-9 lead. Valley was balanced in the scoring department all evening, never so much as the opening quarter, with five different players putting points on the board for head coach Gary Teel.
Teel and Co. experienced not only a balanced attack but also one that was consistent.
"Tonight we shot the ball a lot better than we did against NorthWood," said Teel.
The Vikings fell to NorthWood 50-36 Monday and hit just 4 of 30 shots in the second half.
Against Rochester, the Vikings shot a respectable 22 of 49 from the field.
Many of Valley's field goals came at key times that halted Rochester from building any offensive momentum.
The Zebras started the second half with a 5-0 run before Teel called a timeout with 5:13 left in the third quarter. Directly out of the timeout, Kramer nailed a jumper to deflate Rochester's hopes.
Rochester reeled of an 8-2 run late in the contest before Teel once again called a timeout with 2:11 left in the game and trailing 47-33.
Undaunted, Holli Jackson drove to the basketball and drew a foul. The 5-9 senior connected on both attempts from the charity stripe to extend Valley's lead.
Jackson finished the evening with 13 points, six of which came in the fourth quarter.
Sophomore Chelsy Rhoades was the other Viking to finish in double digits with 10 points.
It was Rhoades who set the tone early for Valley with a three-pointer from downtown Mentone
That shot, along with Valley's early success, led to more confidence from its shooters.
"The kids have confidence. They've had confidence before but it helps when you hit some early shots. What these kids have to learn as shooters is, if the ball doesn't go down, it'll come back. It's not going to leave you forever," said Teel.
Junior Lela Rohrer came off the bench and scored seven points on 3-of-5 shooting to give the Vikings a boost.
Valley had 11 points off the bench. The Viking bench was intregal in a game where Kramer was forced to sit for much of it with foul trouble.
The Eastern Illinois recruit picked up her third foul in the second quarter with 4:10 left in the half then picked up her fourth with 1:10 left in the third quarter.
Not only did the Vikings overcome Kramer's foul trouble but moved one step closer to a potential conference championship.
The win garners the Vikings more than just bragging rights. With the win, Valley remains undefeated in the Three Rivers Conference with just two conference games left.
"We determine our own destiny. We're 5-0 right now and where we want to be in the TRC and we've got a week now to get ready for Southwood. And Southwood is going to be a tough place to play," said Teel of his team's potential run at a conference championship.
Should Valley defeat Southwood, which is currently 2-10, and Manchester is able to defeat Rochester, it sets up a potential conference-deciding matchup between the two area teams, Jan. 29 at Valley.
Valley, 9-6 overall and 5-0 in the TRC, travels to Wabash for its tilt against the Knights Friday with a scheduled tipoff of 7:45 p.m.
