Valley Conducts Budget Hearing

AKRON - Thursday night, the Tippecanoe Valley School Board held a public budget hearing with no members of the public present.

Assistant Superintendent Dr. Daniel Kramer presented the budget figures for 2011 to the board.

Kramer said the budget amounts were advertised twice, Aug. 18 and 25, in both the Times-Union and Rochester Sentinel. The school board must still approve the budget figures at a later board meeting.

The total budget of $21,597,048 includes five funds. Those funds are debt service, capital projects, school transportation, bus replacement and the general fund.

The advertised estimated debt service budget is $2,988,366, with the maximum estimated funds to be raised at $2,740,078.

Capital projects includes a three-year plan. Kramer said that plan is the same as the board discussed in July. The estimated 2011 CPF is $2,243,974 as advertised. The maximum estimated funds to be raised is $2,012,196. Kramer said reductions probably will have to be made to that fund.

A school board can not increase a budget once it has been advertised, but it can always lower it.

The transportation fund as advertised is $1,512,888, with $1,221,587 being the estimated funds to be raised. Kramer said there is a cap on this fund's tax levy, and it will need to be reduced by about $150,000.

The bus replacement budget estimate was advertised as $186,000, with the estimated funds to be raised at $143,281. Kramer said the bus replacement plan is on a 12-year cycle. In 2011, he said Valley will replace two buses.

The general fund is the largest of all the funds in the budget. Valley advertised its 2011 general fund as $14,665,820.

In 2009, the state assumed all schools' general funds. Kramer said he expects they will have to cut more money out of that fund.

"We're estimating our basic grant to be $590,000 less this year than last year," Kramer said.

School corporations are being encouraged to estimate their budgets cautiously and conservatively for 2011, Kramer said, as their budgets may be cut as they were for 2010. It depends on how much Indiana loses in state revenue.

"The bottom line is, even with state reductions in funding, we want to try to live within the dollar funding we receive in any particular year," Kramer said.

After the budget hearing was complete, Board President Dave O'Brien said, "Another fine job, Dan."

In other business, the school board:

n Approved hiring Megan Merley as instructional assistant for Tippecanoe Valley Middle School; Amber New, part-time cook, Akron Elementary; and Con Shewman, bus driver.

n Approved the appointment of April Stiles as the ninth-grade volleyball coach at Tippecanoe Valley High School.

Board members are O'Brien, Bryan Murphy, Hal Hoffman, Mark Wise and Rod Eaton. Eaton was absent at Thursday's meeting.[[In-content Ad]]
