July 28, 2016 at 4:25 p.m.
AKRON - Whitko traveled to Tippecanoe Valley with an upset in mind in its Three Rivers Conference boys basketball opener.
The upset didn't happen, as Valley used two 8-0 runs in the first half to defeat the Wildcats 60-36.
Kevin Kindig grabbed 17 boards and scored 10 points to lead a strong Viking effort.
Kindig pulled down seven rebounds in the first quarter.
"Both teams played very aggresive basketball tonight," said Valley coach Bill Patrick, who improved his career record to 628-216 and his record at Valley to 151-36. "Our defense threw the Whitko offense off and allowed some of our offense to score."
Whitko scored the first points of the game with a slow down style of basketball, with Andrew Warner scoring on a jump shot with 6:32 to play in the first quarter.
Shane Salyer then hit a three-point shot to put Valley up 3-2. Kaleb Swender of Whitko scored on a layup to put the Wildcats up 4-3. That was the last lead the Wildcats held.
Led by Salyer, Valley put together an 8-0 run that spilled over into the second quarter.
"We started with the slow down offense to allow us some good shots," said Whitko coach Rob Irwin. "We just needed to be patient. In the first we were only down five."
The Viking defense began to kick in in the second. After a Whitko basket to end the first run, Valley mathced the previous run to take a 23-11 halftime lead.
"We just couldn't get the shots we wanted," said Irwin. "Valley is a good team and they were just all over us defensively. They are long and quick."
in the third quarter, Valley went to the free throw line 13 times and converted 12 of the charity tosses. Kindig was a perfect 6 of 6 in the quarter.
"Whitko played much better basketball than the score indicated," said Patrick "They are a young team and they are going to win some basketball games before the year is out. Once again our defense just threw them off of their game. Our kids played very hard tonight in a very physical game. They were all over the ball. Kindig was all over the place tonight. He was a killer on the boards."
Salyer led all scorers with 17 points and added five rebounds and a steal.
"Our kids took the turn tonight and we played like a team tonight," said Irwin. "I know people will look at the score and say that we got crushed. But tonight, we came together and the kids played with a lot of intensity."
Ryan Scherzer came off the bench for Valley in the fourth quarter and hit 3 of 4 from three-point land. He also added two steals and a fast-break pass to Salyer, who finished the play with a dunk.
Whitko was led by Warner, who scored 14 points and added seven rebounds. Cory snep contributed nine points, all in the fourth quarter. Swender scored eight points.
"Warner finally stepped up and played the way we expect him to play," said Irwin. "He did a great job."
Chad Hoffer added 10 points for Valley. He also had one steal and three rebounds. Jerrod Parker scored eight points for the Vikings.
The win improved Valley's record to 6-1 overall and 2-0 in conference play.
Whitko dropped to 1-5 and 0-1 in conference play.
