Valley Boys Top Glenn To Advance To Tourney Championship

AKRON -ÊAlthough nearly two weeks had passed since the Tippecanoe Valley boys basketball team's last game, the Vikings didn't look like they missed a beat Friday night. Valley (3A No. 4) picked up a 67-46 win against John Glenn in the first game of the Winning Edge Holiday Tournament.
Earier in the season, Valley defeated Glenn 49-47 in overtime in Walkerton.
Glenn's Korey Pulluaim opened the game with a three-point basket, but Valley's Trey Eaton evened the ante with a three-point goal of his own.
Then Eaton hit another basket to put the Vikings up 5-3 with 5:18 left in the first quarter.
The teams traded baskets through the end of the quarter, with Glenn taking a 9-8 advantage into the second frame.
But that lead did not last long.
Valley's Corey Vanlaningham hit the first basket of the second quarter to give Valley a 10-9 lead. Glenn's Adam Piotrowicz answered with a field goal of his own, putting the Falcons up 11-10.
However, that was Glenn's last lead of the game.
Vanlaningham hit a trey at the 6:45 mark that started a 13-3 Viking run in he second frame. By the end of the first half, Valley held a 28-18 lead.
"We played man-to-man defense the whole game," said Valley coach Bill Patrick. "Our defense was very solid. Our offense was not smooth. We made some bad passes, and I don't think we played hard in the first and second quarters, but we played better in the second half."
And the Vikings just added to that lead as the game moved into the second half.
Glenn's Pulluaim opened the second half with a basket, but it did not phase Valley.
After Pulluaim's basket, Stuart Jackson, Vanlaningham and Trey Eaton scored back-to-back-to-back buckets to take a 36-20 lead.
By the end of the third stanza, Valley had extended its lead to 17, 47-30.
Jackson and Eaton joined forces to score the first four points of the fourth quarter, building a 51-30 lead with 6:52 left in the game.
Through the end of the quarter, Glenn was unable to string together scoring opportunities. The Falcons scored no more than three points in a row, and the Vikings picked up the 21-point win, 67-46.
Eaton finished the night with a double-double, pulling down almost as many rebounds as points scored. He netted 22 points, including 9 of 9 free throws, and pulled down 21 rebounds. Eaton also grabbed three steals.
"Trey played well tonight," said Patrick. "He did a really nice job on the boards out there."
Vanlaningham added 17 points on a 6-of-10 performance on the court.
"Vanlaningham is one of our shooters," said Patrick. "We want him to shot the ball and score. He played a good game tonight as well."
Pulluaim led the Falcons with 22 points even though he fouled out with more than three minutes left in the fourth quarter.
The Vikings (8-0, 1-0 TRC) advance to the championship game of the Winning Edge Tournament tonight in Akron. Valley will take on Rochester at 8 p.m. Glenn will play Winamac in the consolation game at 6 p.m.
