AKRON - Leading Tippecanoe Valley's varsity boys basketball team to its best start in 20-plus years, 6-foot-4 senior Trey Eaton put together arguably the best individual performance of his career.

In a battle of unbeatens, Eaton poured in a career-high 38 points, grabbed 18 rebounds, blocked five shots and dished out five assists to lead 3A No. 4 Valley past 1A No. 3 Argos 75-59.

"We have a great defender in Kurt Robinson, we wanted to make Trey work for everything he got," Argos coach Doug Snyder said. "Give Trey credit, he worked his tail off."

Eaton, who needs just 16 points to break 1992 graduate Scott Johnson's school record of 1,352 career points, finished the game 12 of 17 from the field, including 3 of 5 three-pointers, and 11 of 14 from the free throw line.

"Trey played well, 38 points, 18 rebounds, five blocks," Valley coach Bill Patrick said. "He also made some great passes. He played hard, played well."

The win improved Valley to 10-0 on the season, its best start since the 1976-77 campaign when Eaton's dad, Kevin Eaton, was a senior and the Vikings started 12-0 under Floyd Henson. The win was also the 75th victory for the Vikings under the legendary Patrick, giving him a 75-23 mark in his fifth season.

With the 16-point loss the senior-laden Dragons, who beat Valley by 10 a year ago, fall to 8-1 on the season.

"I feel like I should take the blame," Snyder said. "Bill had his kids prepared and I didn't have my kids prepared. I thought we'd come in here prepared, but that just didn't happen tonight."

A team that scored 88 and 87 points, respectively, in its previous two games, Argos quickly found itself down 14-4 early in the first quarter.

Eaton scored seven points in the run, finishing the opening frame with 13 of his game-high 38.

Down by double digits in the first quarter, the Dragons came back with four three-pointers to cut Valley's lead to one, 19-18, going into the second quarter.

"Valley hit some shots right off the bat," Snyder said. "It takes a lot of energy to come back like that, but the kids are in good shape that's why they're playing. It's hard on you when you spot a team like that, give them confindence like we did Valley."

Once Argos caught up, the Dragons made a game of it in the second and much of the third quarter, trailing 32-30 at halftime and knotted at 43 with 3:28 left in the third.

With the game close, Valley put together a 10-0 run to take a 53-45 lead going into the final frame.

To start the fourth quarter, Eaton dished off an assist to junior Brandon Cody, who converted the old fashioned three-point play, giving Valley an 11-point lead.

Argos got within nine, 68-59, with 1:27 to play but Valley put the game away at the free throw line, hitting 10 of 13 charity tosses in the fourth quarter.

While Eaton's individual performance stole the show, teammate Cory Vanlaningham was impressive in his own right.

Scoring 10 points in third quarter as Valley pulled away, the 5-10 junior finished with 18 points, leading the Vikings' ever-improving guard play.

"I thought Cory Vanlaningham came out in the third quarter and really stepped it up," Patrick said. "Brandon Cody played well, too. All of our guards played well."

Cody finished with nine points, while junior Jeff Parker added six.

As pleased as he was with his team's play, one concern for Patrick now is the condition of junior starter Stuart Jackson, who went down in the second quarter. Unsure after the game, but Patrick said it may be a torn ACL.

Keeping the game close at times with three-point shooting, Argos was led in the scoring column by 13 points each from Kurt Robinson, Joel Vanderweele and Dustin O'Dell.

Valley is in action again at home Saturday against Three Rivers Conference opponent Northfield.
