PIERCETON - Valente M. Valdez Sr., 87, of Pierceton, died at 10:50 p.m. March 16, 2007, in his residence.

He was born July 10, 1919, in San Pedro, Coahuila, Mexico, to Gregorio and Luz Martinez Valdez. On Dec. 30, 1942, in Crystal City, Texas, he married Rafaela A. Valdez, who died Dec. 29, 2003.

He moved to the United States as a migrant worker and settled in Indiana in 1947. He was a lineman for the Pennsylvania Railroad for 20 years, and worked at Whitley Products for 25 years, retiring in 1989.

He attended St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, Pierceton, and was a member of United Auto Workers through Whitley Products.

Surviving are a son, Valente (and wife Susie) Valdez Jr., Bremen; three daughters, Mrs. Dick (Mary) Hepler, Bremen, and Mrs. Jerry (Gloria) Block and Teresa Olivarez, both of Pierceton; 13 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son-in-law, Jose Olivarez.

Services will be at 5 p.m. Tuesday at McHatton-Sadler Funeral Chapel, Pierceton, with Pastor Mark Fishburn and Felipe Rocha officiating. Burial will be in St. Frances Xavier Cemetery, Pierceton.

Calling will be private.
