The citizens of northern Indiana will have the opportunity to hear "The President's Own" United States Marine Band in concert on Monday, Oct. 20 at 7:30 p.m. The concert will be held in the Tiger Den at Warsaw Community High School.[[In-content Ad]]Since my brother was a member of the band in 1963 through 1966, I was aware of the band's national tour schedule and the process required to host the band in your community. Working together with the Times-Union and Warsaw Community High School, an invitation was sent in October 2003 for the band to perform in Warsaw during their 2008 concert tour. Early this year, the national tour director informed me that Warsaw had been selected as the site in northern Indiana for the band's concert. Their only other Indiana concerts are at Ball State University and Purdue University.
The United States Marine Band has been a part of the events that have shaped our national heritage for more than two centuries. Established by an Act of Congress in 1798, the Marine Band is America's oldest professional music organization. Its primary mission is to provide music for the president of the United States and the commandant of the United States Marine Corps. The band has performed for every president since John Adams.
Whether performing for South Lawn arrival ceremonies, State Department dinners or receptions, the Marine Band appears at the White House more than 300 times each year. In addition to these performances, the band participates in more than 500 public performances and ceremonies in the Washington, D.C., metropolitan area.
In its third century, the Marine Band continues a tradition of excellence that earned it the title "The President's Own." Quoting President Ronald Reagan, "Whether serenading Adams and Jefferson, accompanying Lincoln to Gettysburg, or performing here at the White House, the Marine Band has become a national institution and a national treasure."
Each fall, the band continues a tradition initiated by John Philip Sousa, the band's legendary 17th director, when they travel through one of the regions of the United States. This year's tour began Oct. 1 in Lincoln, Bedford Falls, Pa., and ends Oct. 31 in Washington, Pa.
The concert is free, however, tickets are required. Each individual may request up to four tickets by sending a request to
